I've never seen him in action, nor heard much about him. I did a search on ESB, but didn't see any threads that seemed to focus exclusively on him. He was the WBC lightweight champion for a brief period from 1976-1978 and had something like 3 title defenses.. I'm guessing that the main highlight of his career was being the first to put a dent in Roberto Duran's unbeaten record... Apparently, he went to prison for killing someone in a shooting, and died of AIDS during his stay.

Does anyone have any insite on what type of fighter he was? How good of a fighter was he when compared to other lightweights? Any other stories or factoids?

At his best, against Duran the first time, mm, DeJesus was a SWEET fighter -- ice water in his veins -- SO FLUID, like Mantiquila Napoles. Not the least intimidated by Duran -- controlled him effortlessly, like a graceful matador.

Dejesus was a notch below Duran...but a hell of a fighter.

He put Duran down I think 2 times..once in non-title and once in a title shot.

Beat Duran in non-title, but lost 2 brutal title fights to Duran later.

If Duran wasn't around...he would have been the top lightweight in that period.

Tried to move up against Cervantes....but was just too small.

Good boxer with a decent punch.

The complete fights with Duran I & III are out on Youtube. Also Dejsus fight with Cervantes is out there (although that's more a showcase for Cervantes). Here's a start:

Dejesus is very much worth a look. It's hard not to be impressed with him in the first 2 fights against Duran.

    Thanks Natonic.

Don't have time to watch the whole thing, while I am at work, but I saw a brief clip.. That left hook that Dejesus decked Duran with was right on the money.. I'll check the rest of it out later. So far, I'm impressed with what I'm seeing.

Yeah the man was quality in his best performances, and a quality fighter throughout his prime and career. He had footwork, countered very very well, and could mix it inside. Had a lot of the aspects of the game in in his locker.

watched the first fight with Duran again.

He's quite a fast boxer-puncher. He uses good movement with good head movement. A nice boxer to watch.

He throws fast, sharp accurate shots that are powerful. The left hook he caught Duran with is a case and point of this.

Duran did manage to get him to brawl abit but he took it in his stride and fought well in the pocket landing crisp counters after letting Durans shots sail overhead.

He didnt throw his jab enough though.
