Pastrano had great legs, constantly moving for all 15 rounds. A nice jab and good defense gave Johnson a lot of problems, but Harold started to catch up to him in the later rounds and nail him with the right hand repeateadly.
Nah, you've just seen it different. I thought Pastrano nicked it on the last round, but been a while since I watched it.
Willie had tons of respect and a little bit of fear of Harold Johnson...and adopted...according to his chapter in Peter Heller's great "In This Corner"...a super smart and it turned out, an effective strategy for his bout with Johnson. He would move, move, move and force the champion to be the aggressor, "whilst" he, Pastrano, would couynter. He got HJ out of his comfort zone, and after watching that fight numerous times over the years...it's a favorite of mine, ...I'm now convinced that Pastrano just barely nicked it.
He's only Australian on Wednesdays, or so he told me in person at the Lee J. Cobb Film Festival in Caxap Russia one day.
It helped that Johnson was near 35 years old with a lot of mileage. I personally felt Johnson looked faster, better reflexes on film against Moore in 54. Still a good win for pastrano, Johnson was far from washed up. But he wasn’t prime. Pastrano had a great game plan
Great boxer, a counter puncher who fed off his opponents moves.Tremendous physical specimen who tackled the heavies with some success . Johnson had the misfortune of being around when Archie Moore was the dominant 175pounder . Top ten all time at the weight.imo
