Ive been trying to expand my boxing knowledge in the last year or so by buying fights of other good european fighters of the 80s and 90s such as Benn, Eubank, Graham, Steve Collins, Watson, etc.. Another guy whos been recently sticking out has been Kalambay. Impressive record, former champ with a good run of victories in the late 80s over McCallum, Graham, Barkley, Dewitt, Collins, etc.. I have bought and watched alot of the previous mentioned fighters' fights and studied them, read about them and so forth, I dont have much info on Kalambay. What can you guys tell me as far as his boxing style, ability, attitude, notable fights you might remember or any other interesting info? Thanks in advance
Kalambay-McCallum 1 is one of THE greatest exhibitions of boxing skills I have ever seen. His style had shades of Floyd Mayweather I think. You should youtube that fight now!
He got sparked against Nunn which was odd as Kalambay was known for having a durable chin and Nunn wasn't known for 1 punch ko's. He had power overall but he was never the puncher that he showed against Kalambay.
I'm no expert on Kalambay, truth be told, but I do know he was a very slick, counter puncher. Good fundamentals, good enough to take O's from Herol Graham and The Body Snatcher. I should watch more of him myself.
I hate first round KOs. Not saying they're flukes but Id much rather see the opposing skillsets for a few rounds to grasp a better understanding of styles. Oh well..
Watch Mccallum-Kalambay 2. I heard some thought Kalambay won it but Mccallum squeked by with a close decision. Kalambay put on a very technical clinic in the first fight which is another fight you should see if you haven't. He's the only man to school a prime if not close to prime Mccallum imo. I also recommend his fight with DeWitt as he showed some pretty crafty defense in it and made him look bad and eventually stopped him.
Thanks for the info. Im going to watch those in a little while. I just finished watching McCallum Collins. Scored it 8-4 for McCallum
That was one brutal KO. Thing is that Kalambay, however skilled he was, had trouble with southpaws. He also dropped a decision to an over the hill Ayub Kalule. In Italy!
Hey its a start. I usually buy career collections from other collectors but youtube's not a bad place to start
The Kalule ight is actually on yt but doesn't have the best quality. I'll look at it anyways. Not at all. if I wasn't tied up with fights I have currently then I'd be watching fights on youtube again.
