I just recently watched CHAMPION starring Kirk Douglas. I thought it was pretty good, all things considered. Apparently it was a nominee for Best B&W cinematography, but the version available for streaming on Netflix is colorized (and sourced from VHS no less). Shouldn't there be a rule against colorizing anything that would be considered noir? Whatever. I'm not long for this world where everything good is turned to ****. CHAMPION was interesting because the character never gets a chance at redemption the way you would expect him to in this type of genre film. RAGING BULL confounded me upon first viewing. Of course I could appreciate it's quality, but I wasn't sure why anyone would want to watch a film about such a deplorable character. This made me morbidly fascinated. A lot of great films leave you with questions afterward, and this was certainly the case here. To be honest, I still have questions about why I'm drawn to the film. I'd really like to read some thoughts from The Classic Forum about your favorite boxing films. Note: I enjoy the ROCKY series as much as the next guy, but I feel that I've read, thought, and seen everything regarding these films. I'd really like to hear about some other films. Unless of course you have something truly brilliant to share, then by all means. I have to admit, I was amused by Jazzo's hatred of the Rocky films. He was such a weirdo. Anyway...
The fights shown in the Rocky series were a joke. But other than that, the movies were fairly good, especially the first part. Million Dollar Baby, the fictional movie about a female boxer actually has much better fight scenes than Rocky! Cinderella Man in the best boxing movie I have ever seen. The Hurricane is brilliant as well, but there has very little about Rubin Carter's time as a boxer in that movie. So maybe you can't call it a boxing movie. A recent movie (4-5 years old) that was excellent but went largely unnoticed is 'Resurrecting the champ' starring Samuel Jackson & Josh Hartnett. And of course, 'The Fighter' starring Mark Wahlberg & Christian Bale was Oscar winning stuff. If you like watching documentaries, try to get hold of 'Tyson', 'Unforgivable blackness' & 'When we were kings'. Outstanding, all three of them.
The Harder They Fall (1956)...Bogart, Rod Stieger, Max Baer, Jersey Joe Walcott,...all were great in their roles. A classic boxing tale.
Raging Bull rocks. DeNiro's perfect Rocky is like half a weird sublimated white hope dream and half ultrapatrotic propaganda.
I've been wanting to see BODY & SOUL for awhile, JG. What's lame is that the remake is available on dvd, but the original is not. So I guess I have to dig up a vhs copy from somewhere :bart Maybe some brilliant individual will show it on the big screen here in the cittay.
He was relatively restrained in his role as an unsavory fight manager..he was up against Bogart in this one..that could have been a reason.
Canada Lee's Academy Award winning -- but largely unheralded -- performance as JG's brain-damaged trainer is heart-breaking, B
I just happen to love largely unheralded Academy Award winning performances. Sold! Looks like I can find a vhs copy pretty cheap.
You mother fluffers, I said I didn't want Rocky stuff in this thread. If you want me to talk Rocky, I can talk Rocky all day and all night. Don't tempt me. I've been meaning to see Fat City. Anyone see it? Any other recommendations?
The Set up with Robert Ryan ,1947 l think ,about a washed up fighter, is still a brilliant film today. The street Fighter with charles Bronson are two of my favorites. keo.
