He defended his title against too many white guys called Scott.

But I give him props for fighting all three Mario brothers : Alfredo, Lorenzo and Lucien.

He was a great champion and did beat Weaver, Witherspoon, Shavers, Norton, and Cooney which is not too shabby. Many also have him beating Spinks in the rematch which is impressive in itself because he didn't lose until he was past prime and still gave a good effort in the Spinks rematch. I can easily have him around top 4-8 as a HVY ATG . I have him over Frazier & Marciano but I'm not sure if he should be over Evander though he competed better against very good-elite fighters at an advancing age though Holy still has those Tyson wins. Holmes still was very competitive against a prime Holyfield at age 43! Holmes was incredible and had the best jab in hvy boxing. I much prefer him over the klits and he brought more excitement than they do. No diss to them but they ain't and never will be as great as Holmes. I think Holmes will be the last HVY ATG to be in his 40's that still was able to compete at a high level.

I forgot to mention that the only person to stop him was a fellow ATG in Tyson and Holmes was 39 and very faded at that time! He fought Smith, Cooney, Shavers twice, Witherspoon, prime Holyfield, and Norton(last three had good power) and the only puncher to stop him was Tyson who was prime when Holmes fought him. That's incredible! Holmes was great and is somewhere in the second half of the top ten hvy's all time(5-10) if not 4th.

I personally think he ranks somewhere in the 4-7 range, haven't pinned it down to a number yet, but I usually have him either one ahead of Lewis or one behind him.

around 5-10 on my list. I have him around 7 myself.

I cant really rank him over Ali or Louis, and cant see why people put Holmes over the Rock, who clear out his era, were Holmes failed to do so, also Holmes face way too many 11-0 type guys in his title defenses. I would perfer few title defenses against top class over MANY title defenses against lower class so to speak.
