the thread about bobo olson made me curious. bobo was definitely not a better fighter then srr (not to much success in the 4 fight series), but as a middleweight champion, he was pretty darn good himself and did alot of very good things in the middleweight division. one of the ten greatest middleweights? im very curious:think the top of the list would probably be that three way virtual lock of hopkins, hagler and monzon. then im guessing robinson, ketchel, ceradan, zale and lamotta (in random order). what ten fighters did the most in the middleweight division?
You could argue Hopkins outside of the top 10. Bobo doesn't even sniff it. The depth in the division is astounding.
If thats the criteria it hurts Greb, Hopkins, Jones Jr, Fitzsimmons, Toney a great deal in their rankings. Also are we not looking at dominance and losses? Many see a resume with lots of great names and ignore the fact the fighter wasn't as dominant as others with lesser resumes but performed better against the best
Oh geese I couldn't put Bobo near a top ten. Also you would take Hopkins in your top three and ten instead of Greb? I've begrudginly had to admit Hopkins may deserve a top ten place and Jake just making it also. Zale is also deserving and probably just outside the top ten.
Hopkins Hagler Robinson Monzon Greb Flowers Fitzsimmons Walker Ketchel Steele Honorable Mentions: Cerdan Tiger LaMotta Burley Charles Langford Zale
In chronological order, the bold ones are the ones I think could top the list: Dempsey Fitzsimmons Ryan Ketchel Greb Steele Robinson Tiger Monzon Hagler Hopkins
excellent points, my idea of this thread was not to find the better fighters, but to find the fighters that made the most accoplishments in the division. in your eyes of course. if you like longevity over quality wins or quality performances over number of titles... its all up to you.
lamotta did beat once to the best man of your first list, and their fights were pretty close. he might beat many men of your first list.
Gilroy doesn't make any top 10's, he's a forgotten and overlooked fighter. He is defo a Brit top 10 and arguably Britain's greatest middleweight. One thing is for sure, he fought more light-heavies & heavyweights (they were the only fights he could get), than any of his contemporaries and he is fit for any middleweight in history. He should have got his shot at McAvoy 1939-41, and then it would have been the yanks Zale and co. How would they have faired against the big men Gilroy fought, this is a good measure of Gilroy; the MIDDLEWEIGHT.
01. Sugar Ray Robinson 02. Marvellous Marvin Hagler 03. Carlos Monzon 04. Harry Greb 05. Jake LaMotta 06. Charley Burley 07. Randolph Turpin 08. Marcel Cerdan 09. Bernard Hopkins 10. Bob Fitzsimmons
In no order i guess it would be: Monzon Hagler Robinson Bhop Greb Jones Jr LaMotta Fitz Turpin Ketchel If this were H2H no doubt the list would look much different .
