i guess it's guys who fought there the majority of their careers against guys who were better but moved through in a handful of fights.

tommy hearns is clearly a better h2h 168 proposition than froch, but career wise froch is a much better smw.

edit - yeah ward and calzaghe have to on the list, by either criteria i just mentioned.

Dude, you are one of the best posters on this forum so I totally respect your opinion. We have had disagreements before like the Herans vs McCallum fantasy matchups and they have always been respectful. I only get chippy with folks when they post stupid **** about Tony Galento or some other piece of **** being an atg.

I can get why folks don't like the way Ward beat Kessler and there definitely was some controversy with both of the Kovalev fights but at the end of the day, Ward is one of those guys that simply finds a way to win and he always seemed out tye toughest fighters of his era. I was one of those guys that didn't like his tactics against Kessler but at the end of the day, he did what he had to do and I can respect that. I still think he legit beat Kovalev twice but acknowledge that some of those body shots were borderline. I just like Ward because he was brilliant strategically and fo7nd a way too win big fights even when he clearly wasn't 100% physically. The Showtime documentary made me a huge fan of his and if you haven't seen it, it is well worth the time to watch.

Regarding Calzaghe, I do remember when the Glen Johnsonbfight fell through but I remember it having to do more with the health of his brittle hands which caused him issues throughout his career. Had they fought, I think Calzaghe would have dominated the significantly slower Jonhson with his hand speed and angles. I also have no problem with Calzaghe beating Jones. It was the end of both of their careers and it was far and away the biggest payday available for both men. Prime for prime, I think almost everyone would take Roy over Calzaghe.

    Good thread.

First thing that jumps out at me, no Carl Froch ???

Secondly, Eubank Benn & Collins ahead of Toney?

The top 5 are Jones, Ward, Toney, Calzaghe and Alvarez. I’m not set on the exact order although Jones is number 1 H2H by a clear margin and he arguably has the best single win in the history of the division against Toney, which is enough to put him on top overall too.

Resumé-wise, I’d put Froch next after those guys because he fiought everyone he could, even though he lost to Ward and Kessler, and whilst he wasn’t the most talented (the comparison point @kingfisher3 made about Froch and Hearns, for example, is spot on in terms of how I see the division too) he achieved more than most.

After that, the other British super middles like Benn and Eubank deserve their place and Ottke might sneak into the top 10, which reflects the shallowness of the division, I think, more than his merits as a fighter.
