Fair call. Given his incredible dominance and consistency i don't think he's that much behind Sampras right now tho. His efforts in the French (the one neither has won) have also been much stronger. Two very supreme players.

The Mac would kick both of their butts on a fast surface :)

I love tennis, BTW. I think the Fed is the best ever!

This is arguable IMO. Whilst Seles would likely have won quite a few more GS titles had it not been for that crazed incident, it would have been a tricky ask for her to rack up quite the amount of titles that Navratilova did. By '93 Seles and Graf they were both very close in terms of No of slams won: Seles had a couple of fantastic years around 92/93 but you'd be silly to think that (even had the stabbing not occured) all of a sudden a player of Graf's calibre pedigree was going to get swept aside all of a sudden for a prolonged spell especially in the midst of her prime.

Remember Graf had slight edge on grass by this stage and was always the better player of the two on this surface. :good

If Fed retired right now he'd rank ahead of Sampras (without a doubt) regardless of not having yet broke his GS record, yet. Overall prime for prime Roger is the more complete all round player and better across all surfaces (he'd have the edge over Pete on hardcourt and particularly clay. Grass is maybe a toss up- though if my life depended on it, I'd plump for Fed across a close five setter).

Opposition is close to call, Sampras had some big names in his era but only Agassi really stuck around for the duration. Edberg and Becker were still very good but not quite what they had been. Lendl was past it. Courier had a short peak and the likes of Goran and whilst hugely talented always seemed to choke on the big ocassion (before he eventually won Wimbledon in '01). Krajicek and Stich played some sublime grasscourt tennis the years they won it but weren't really consistent for the long run (at least not in the biggies).

Djokovic, Roddick, Davydenko, Ferrer and Hewitt (on best form) as well as a few others are on a par with most of who I've mentioned above (better than some) ability wise. In addition there's a greater pool of strength in depth at present- the only reason the aforemantioned current crop haven't won any (or more) grand slams is that they're playing in the same era as the best player ever. :good

Disagree with the 'beaten as good opposition' bit here. The talent pool is deeper now. The number 30 guy is superior to the equivalent 10/15 years ago. Federer far better on clay too, Pete's big weakness. Roger won 12 grand slams since 2003. Far better average than Sampras managed.

At his peak he was amazing, but i can't see him getting past Fed and Sampras. Maybe on grass.

Federer and Sampras would dust Mac on grass.

Mac would stand a very good chance of beating Nadal, though. :good

Seles was 3-1 over Graf in Grand Slam finals at the time of the stabbing. From 1990 to the stabbing Seles had won 8 Grand Slam events and Graf 5. Seles was defintely on track for a lot more having nabbed 8 in under 3 years. Navratilova got to 18 i think and i reckon Seles would have got very close, if you meant Graf we are looking at 22. With a streaking Seles not being taken out Graf's titles would of course have been noticably reduced. At the time Graf had her own troubles and was flattening out a bit while Seles if anything was still improving.

Well they only ever played on grass twice with Graf being victorious. Stef did beat her well at Wimbledon tho when Seles was playing strong. Even so tho Wimbledon is just one of 4 grand slam events per year and Seles had no probs with the others.

Graf was actually my fave woman player, but Seles certainly would have made a good run at history given a fair shot. Graf may have still finished ahead in slams but rest assured it would have been very tight.

Probably but it's still Mac's best chance. Federer would handle his serve on cement and Mac would be dominated overall from the backcourt by him. Sampras too has a huge hardcourt game. My entire thinking is that McEnroe's best chance is on grass as he has more chance to hold serve and might sneak thru a few tiebreaks. I think Federer and Sampras could break him enough on hard court to win comfortably most of the time. On grass there's bugger all baseline rallies and tho Mac could live back there Fed would definitely dominate him from the back. I really don't think Mac's groundies would hold up to these two.

While I agree that the stabbing prevented Seles getting closer to Graf I don't think she'd have beaten her at Wimbledon. I've always rated Martina (yes, hated her too) as the top man. :good

    Hahaha, dad did too

Yeah Graf beat Seles well in their one Wimby final and had that cutting slice backhand which was very effective on clay as opposed to a more defensive weapon on other surfaces.

On to the Aussie action: I see Djokovic showed Nadal how it's done- comfortable straight sets win. Fed is cruising at the moment and looks in fine shape. He took the 1st set 6-0 and is currently 4-1 up in the second.

Main shock so far is Bartoli going out of the ladies. Apparently Venus had a few sticky moments before she took her win.
