So after getting another loss on his resume, I wanted to dispel this myth that Teo fights to the level of his opposition. While it is true that some fighters get motivated for some fights more than others, I feel as though it has been used as an excuse too much for other fighters and I think Teo has been one of those for a long time. Now for the record, I used to be a big fan of this guy since he beat Loma and Taylor and was fully on board that he is a generational talent that needs to get his head straight but after rewatching his fights it's clear to me that he has a lot of fundamental problems in his game that have been swept under the rug for far too long as him being "unfocused'. Just watch from all his losses and shaky performances from Kambosos, Sandor, Ortiz, and now Shakur, where he couldn't cut the ring off and was being beaten to the punch every time he was forced to lead. You can tell that he is fast and athletically gifted but the problem is that he doesn't know how to use those tools properly on top of all the holes in his game. He needs a new coach to polish said attributes and his dad definetly isn't much help. Don't believe me just look at Teo's fight in the Olympics, where he got eliminated in the first round against Sofiane Oumiha (someone Keyshawn stopped) where he lost for the exact same reasons mentioned above in the Shakur fight and his other shaky performances. These mistakes have been fundamental problems with Teo as a fighter from the very beggining and he still hasn't fixed them as he and his dad are too delusional to even consider them problems. Agreed, it's not an issue with fighting to the level of his opponent when he struggles with the same style over and over again, it's a stylistic flaw in his make up as a fighter. Sometimes I wonder what people are watching, it's been as clear as day that this has been an issue since the Kambosos Jr and Martin fights. If it happens once you can put it down to a poor performance, twice suggests a clear issue with a certain style, now 3 times it's undeniable.
Yehh and after the Shakur fight, I hope he gets the reality check he needs. I think Robert Garcia would be a good trainer for him as he always shows respect for Teo in all of his interviews.
Teofimo simply didn't have the style to beat Shakur, and Shakur was also a fighter whose style didn't suit him at all. Despite the defeat, Teofimo still has a long line of boxing and good fights ahead of him...
Lopez has an ambush style that relies on athleticism. He's not fundamentally sound with his hands down style. He's not a great boxer or a good pressure fighter. He just has a style that matches up well against stationary fighters, but becomes less effective the moment he has to consistency attack. Throw in a southpaw stance and he's even more confused. Go back to the Kambosos fight and all his flaws are in full display.
The only fighter that can beat Shakur is Terence Crawford. Teo, Loma, Tank, these are way below Bud And Shak.
Lopez has systemic issues and technical limitations for sure. They'll always be obvious against opponents who make him lead or would require him to cut the ring/get inside in order to break down. He couldn't initiate an aggressive push forward last night without his feet looking like a mess. If he wants to fix that, he should drop that ****ing moronic father of his.
He can't fix it. It's too late. Every time he moves forward to punch, he takes a little bounce step that is relatively easy to spot. Stationary fighters are not fast enough to get out of the way, but anyone who can box well can see it coming and step back a little. This habit is ingrained into his style, along with his hands down habits.
It’s not that they’re similar, its that Kambosos who is levels below Shakur could still effectively run Teofimo into things due to his inability to fight on the front foot. The difference is against lesser fighters, Teo can fumble around when trying to lead, and still use his explosiveness and athleticism to counter effectively (hence the Kambo fight being a competitive and close fight) He can’t get away with it on a fighter on Shakur’s level. As someone who did buy the narrative that Teo fought to his level of competition, I feel that’s wrong now… He just doesn’t fight well at all on the front foot, and thats a common theme in all of his bad performances… Obviously, its more clear against better fighters.
As I have said many times, whilst there are lots of elite boxers out there who are very talented there aren't that many complete elite boxers out there and what I mean by complete is fighters who can deal with all style and land consistently with their shots vs all styles Sure every fighter is troubled more by certain styles than others or a particular certain style but many fighters are like a fish out of water vs certain styles and just cannot deal with them Usyk can deal with every style and land consistently with his shots So too could Loma Floyd Bivol can Crawford Inoue You never see or saw these guys swinging and missing wildly vs certain style and being unable to land with their shots. Never see them looking lost and clueless in there or being outclassed or strugglingly mightily to close the distance and get into range to land with their shots. I never bought into this myth that Teo fights to the level of his opposition to excuses his losses and unofficial losses. It's not like he comes in out of shape and has discipline issues when it comes to training. He just cannot deal with certain styles. Weight bullies being far less effective at higher weights than they are at lower ones is a very real thing and their power being far less effective at higher weights is too. We see this happen often. The KOs dry up when they move up and stop terrorizing leprechauns they're much bigger than. Teo did beat the bigger Taylor at 140 but we're supposed to just conveniently forget that Taylor hadn't fought in 16 months, was coming off multiple injuries, an unofficial loss in which he looked terrible, and he should be 0-4 in his last 4 fights just like we're supposed to conveniently forget Teo should've been 4-3 in his last 7 and now 4-4 in his last 8
Yep this, make him lead and press and he struggles it's a common theme in all the fights where he has struggled. But stand in front of him or take it too him and he excels. He just needs to be more cleverly matched up from now on.
I still remember when people actually likened Teo to Duran for being both gifted but undisciplined. But boy how wide that gap is lmfao.
