After Kambosos I thought Teo should've gotten serious about his career. Got his dad out of the corner and worked with someone who could harness his physical gifts and develop a style that takes advantage of them. Senior is a shackle on Junior's ankle. Teo hasn't learnt anything since then. He has fought at least 4 southpaws and I didn't see him try to put his lead foot outside Shakur's. Teo telegraphs his jab a bit so when he holsters it, he becomes very predictable. He has no patience and panics when behind.
They’re both incredible fighters it’s testament to Stevenson that he can make defeating such an elite fighter look relatively simple. If you sit there and analyse just one minute of that fight you can find so much going on and have to slow it down to really appreciate just how nuanced and skillful those interchanges are and the level of IQ and physicality on display. Stevenson is A++ tier whilst Lopez is A to B tier depending on his motivation level. Stevenson is always motivated no matter who is in the opposite corner, and that can be the difference between ATG and elite in terms of overall body of work. Lopez Sr is also a disaster and we should probably congratulate Teo on getting here with half a trainer.
I can’t believe people used this excuse for so long. This whole narrative is part of the reason Shakur is seen as invincible now
Teo did fight to the level of his opposition when he beat Lomachenko and Taylor, though, but he looked so flat and limited against Shakur. It was obvious from round 3 that he was going to lose every round if he didn't throw caution to the wind. He probably would've still lost, but it was clear his head wasn't in it, and he was there to pick up the cheque. Very poor from Lopez and very impressive from Shakur. It's disingenuous to say Lopez has never fought to the level of his opposition; Shakur is simply on another level. The reason he had so much success against Lomachenko was his size, and against Taylor, to play devil's advocate, this was post-Catterall, when he did not have the same level of viciousness. Taylor was struggling to make 140, too. Shakur was a healthy 140, fresh, confident, with an elite-tier P4P skill set, and beat Lopez in every department, but Lopez still did not try to rough him up, throw combinations, take one to land one; he was extremely flat and disappointing. The Lopez who beat Taylor would've put on a much better showing vs Shakur. He would almost definitely still lose, but it wouldn't have been the 120-108 we watched.
Teo had already lost when Shakur beat him and unofficially he should've had 3 losses in his last 7 fights, to Kambosos, Martin, Ortiz and as such he wasn't even ranked in the P4P top 10 at the time despite having wins over 2 top 10 P4P guys. Loma was P4P#1 and Taylor #10 but both had been inactive (14 and 16 months respectively), were injured or had been inactive due to multiple injuries, and Loma was a tiny blown up 126 fighting a massive 135 weight bully in what would be at least his 7th weight class had he turned pro at the same age fighting Teo in his first one. Even Teo said Loma was too small, a 126 pounder, and he himself was a big guy and that Loma would not be able to take his power. Loma is the one who did all the hard work winning three belts individually in his opponent's backyards or on the road vs much bigger fighters in a division he was tiny for and then along came the massive weight bully winning them all in one fell swoop off a much smaller fighter in his backyard with a home ref and three home judges. Haney did the same vs Kambosos. He won all the belts in one fell swoop off someone he was much bigger than and who was an extremely favourable stylistic match up for him vs a fighter who his assistant trainer took a SD despite being old and past their prime and only having fought once in 3.5 years and being the same size as Teo not much bigger Taylor was coming off an unofficial loss in his previous fight 16 months earlier and should be 0-4 in his last 4 fights Teo should be 4-4 in his last 8 and 4-3 at 140 with 1 KO and 1 KD 3 of those losses to slick or backfoot boxers He was a much more devastating puncher at 135 when he was a huge weight bully than he was at 140 So whilst it was an excellent win and performance by Shakur it's not like Teo's glaring weakness to certain styles hadn't been exposed numerous times and the only reason he didn't have 3 losses as opposed to 1 was because of corruption rearing its ugly head again
He didn't do well against Kambosis, Martin or Ortiz also, all 3 beat him imo. He has never been elite and is one of the most overrated fighters of this era. He beat Loma who was not special at 135 because he was too small, and he beat Taylor the guy who got cooked by Catterall in his previous fight. He is an athletic but limited fighter who really ain't that good of a boxer. You can't be elite if you can't deal with slick boxers at all. He is B level. I didn't see him excelling against Glaggert who went the distance and busted his face up. All these narratives about Teo are nonsense.
