oh boy... stevenson had the absolute perfect style to kick the fuccking ass of larry holmes... he had a fcking killer right hand, he was fast, athletic, taller than holmes, accurate puncher.... the only problem is that the cuban was a 4 rounder fighter.. if you train him for more rounds.. he would destroy holmes.. by ko.. yes clean ko
Holmes,...like the cream,...would rise to the top....after a few awkward, hairy moments. The Holmes jab would set up the right to do most of the damage...for a ko or tko in 13.
Stevnson looked stiff and awkward only having to box for a few rounds. Holmes would kill him. Amateur success doesn't equal pro success. Just ask Fraudley Harrison.
It is a very big assumption that Teofilio Stevenson would become a top professional fighter, especially one who would have a decent chance to do well in a bout with vintage Larry Holmes - Chuck Johnston
in the amateurs T.S. would be a nightmare for Holmes but professional boxing and 10-15 rounds changes a fighters strategy and game plan....not too many people beat T.S. in his turf but Holmes would beat him in his. Shame we never got to see T.S. develop as a pro and his loyalty to Castro was only appreciated when he was winning golds. T.S. would have had the tools to beat Holmes with his rocket chop of a right hand Cuban sledgehammer but Larry proved he could fight in the pro's not T.S.
in a 4 rounder teofilo just knock him out cold... were not the amateur gloves bigger than professional gloves?
Stevenson was coming to the end of his pomp, Holmes was in the middle of his. Larry had seven/eight years of pro experience, half of those at the top level of the game. Teo would have what... six months tops to prepare?! Stevenson was a sensational talent, but Holmes is a top 10 Queensberry Rules Heavyweight. Larry would win easily, perhaps embarrassingly so. And as I have ton of respect for the Cuban, I am glad it did not happen.
If they had fought Larry, would have kayoed the talented but really overrated Teofilo in 3 rounds, too much experience, and Teo never solved Igor Vysotsky, so how is he going to handle Larry.
Stevenson was a great amateur but it's hard to judge how he'd do against elite pros who were as experienced as him and were used to fighting 10 plus round fights. I think he would easily be beaten in a 15 round fight against a prime Holmes. Stevenson almost always held a vast experience advantage over the U.S. top amateurs. He was a pro fighting amateurs.
