Tefilo Stevenson has an amateur record of 302-22, he was triple Olympic champion(1972;1976;1980),3 times world champion(1974;1978;1986) and 2 times panamerican champion(1975;1979). He refused , or did not aloud by Castro to turn pro.He was offerd to Fight ALI...and refused. Would've he been a great fighter as a pro??? I think , yes. he had a lot of talent, he was verry well prepared and he had a great power. Here is a short but verry good documentary about him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOB7_BFqUeU
sure would have, Ali and Stevenson are actually great friends, Ali has been to Cuba and spent time with Stevenson, and Stevenson has traveled to the US multiple times and stayed with Ali's family. This content is protected This content is protected
There has never been an amateur fighter like Stevenson, he refused to turn pro in order to stay true to his country. He made Cuban people like me proud but I personally would have loved to see him fight in Pros just like so many other great fighters from Cuba (all the best fighters from cuba have never turned Pro, Stevenson, Balado, Kindelan, Savon and Rigondeaux) a great quote from Stevenson when a reporter asked why he dosent turn pro for millions of dollars was "Why would I turn pro for 12 million dollars when I have 12 million people that love me here in Cuba, that's more valuable than any amount of money"
I have seen that short documentary on Stevenson. Great size, and with a hell of a lot of power. Very successful amateur. But comparing an amateur to a professional, is like comparing apples and oranges. Can't and shouldn't be done.
Mario Kindelan beat both Miguel Cotto too easily and then beat Felix Trinidad with a broken right hand, you honestly think that would have changed if he had turn pro and faced them again ?
A lot of good amateur fighters become verry good pro fighters: Oscar Dela Hoya, Joel Casamayor,Shane Mosley,Roy Jones Jr., Lucian Bute so i think ur wrong.
Man this thread gets me all nostalgic worse than ****ing Petula Clark (who?). Anywho, yeah, Stevenson/Ali why has it not materialized. Just think about that. If Teofilo had kicked Ali's ass, huh? How it would have changed the course of history! No Reaganomics, no neocons, no Iran-Contra affair, no Oliver North, no Bush Doctrine and Americans would all be smoking big fat Cuban cigars - yay!
Stevenson stood no chance against any of the top pro heavyweights of the day. Let alone Ali. He was a slow plodder with a long reach and that was about it. Against today's heavyweights, he would have been awesome!
I think Stevesno would,ve contribued to the greatest HW generation of all time(Ali, Foreman,Fraizer,Norton,Bonavena,Bugner,Quarry) with great entertaining fights.
Ali by slaughter for any of the 100 reasons posted in any of the 100 other threads exactly like this. Stevenson never faced any full grown boxer of note and struggled against many young kids just learning the game. Ali would ****ing kill any three round fighter.
