Loma is simply the metaphor, the most perfect fighter in decades. Bud stung and put down by a guy who drew with a B level his last time out, in front of 1.6 million viewers no less, not to mention a crowd filled with well known faces, prime time on ESPN. Yep, that's embarrassing for someone who believes they are P4P #1, and who has immense pride.
After the third round Crawford shifted gears and went after him, the result? an azz whippin. Does he get hit occasionally? Yeah, he ain't selling insurance for a living is he?
When it's a fighter you like, "he wanted to prove a point". When it's one you don't like "he got hit too much, looked bad". Reminds of some of GGG's fights where some people said he liked getting hit or didn't care because he tasted the power and didn't bother him and others said he looked bad. I don't recall GGG getting hit like this and dropped, by non-elites no less.
Crawford is a good defensive fighter. He didn’t look good in the last fight but it was only one fight. Ultimately he cane back to knock the guy out. You can’t leave that out of the equation. Still I was surprised to see him eat so many shots early in the fight.
I've always said that Crawford leaves himself too open at times. He gets hit flush more often than he should be. People should look at the first round of the Lundy fight. He got hit by some big shots. This is a consistent problem. He does make good adjustments though and he's one of the best in boxing. However, he's making adjustments against B-C level fighters, not elite. That leaves a lot of questions to be answers. What happens when he has a opponent in front of him who can also make adjustments? I feel like Crawford's boxing skills are not truly elite. His fighting skills are elite. He was getting outboxed by EK until he started fighting, using his speed and power to overwhelm EK. This is why I see him having problems with the likes of (pre-crash) Spence, Porter and even Brook. I can see Spence winning a decision. I can see Porter overwhelming him and winning a decision. I can see Brook outboxing him early on and bank enough rounds before Crawford make the adjustments. I want to see Crawford with any of those guys. He's been posing more questions than answers lately and it's hard to see where he ranks at 147 until he start fighting those guys.
In general, it's pretty good. He tends to start slowly while he gets the download, and since he's not ultra-fast he susceptible to getting tagged. That was the case against Kavaliauskas. But as the fight wore on, Crawford started to get a better idea of where Kav's punches were coming from and didn't get tagged with anything really significant after the sixth. So, if you do want to tag Crawford, it's best to do it early.
Definitely has a lot of holes in his defense that can be exploited. Porter, Spence, etc, simply aren’t good enough defensively themselves to get the job done.
I just don’t see this “master” boxer that some of y’all claiming him to be. He’s a true fighter with a mean streak and killer instinct, but fundamentally, he’s not a wizard of any kind. He’s good enough to beat the likes of Porter, Spence, Thurman, but he never would’ve been able to beat a prime Pacquiao, Oscar, Floyd, etc.
It’s the pattern of how he gets hit though. He usually get hit with the same type of punches in back-to-back sequence even in later rounds when he start to dominate. A great defensive wizard will usually acknowledge, anticipate, and completely nullify a combo that you hit him in the early rounds.
