Alfredo Martinez vs. Darin Hampton, 4 rounds @ welterweight

 

Round 1

Martinez is planting his lead foot, turned askew, thrusting a hard jab into the chest while leaning in & down to one side. Hampton tries punching with him, mistiming a 1-2 by a half-beat and missing over Martinez's bent upper back. Steady body jabs and 1-2s up top by Martinez. Hampton matching him for work rate but not accuracy, getting belted across the ring. Martinez working in more right crosses & leads, changing aim from high to low on every few. Hampton dives in from outside with a loose and sloppy 1-2, then bows down with earmuffs on and breaks into a shuffling awkward lateral trot. Hampton feeling the pace. Martinez is caught by a double jab as Hampton lulls him and then dashes forward.

Dierry Jean doesn't have Crawford's number; he's just a guy that claims he can be number one. But the WBO belt he's not won.

 

Round 2

Martinez is scoring jabs while bounding sideways across the ring to keep up with a fleeing Hampton, cutting the ring off. Lead uppercut breaking the guard followed by some clubbing lefts from Martinez. Hampton is hurt. Martinez stays on him and swarms him into the ropes as Hampton covers up, mouth-breathing heavily. Body shots by Martinez. Hampton is wailed on with hooks downstairs and jabbed & crossed in the face relentlessly, opening up a nosebleed and resulting in a knockdown from accumulation. Hampton beats the count but is driven into a corner under a barrage, head snapped back from an uppercut, down again, gum shield flying out. Time in, saved by the bell.

Round 3

Martinez jumps out early and starts to assail Hampton with left hooks under the guard. Big rainbow rights arcing up from Martinez's rear shoulder and down into Hampton's jaw from mid-range. Hampton is playing defense, keeping distance, picking off shots and throwing a stay-away jab in Martinez's line of sight on the backfoot. Martinez is bending over to his right and drilling the body with jabs from outside, not wasting much energy in pursuit. Hampton changes directions, throwing a wide jab while crossing his feet and getting countered by a couple of grazing discus-toss power shots from Martinez. Hampton remains in survival mode, content to just skim the hairline of Martinez with the odd jab while circling wide and getting countered repeatedly with right hands that snap his head back but don't land flush enough (or head-on, as he is traveling away from them) to dole full damage.

Round 4

Martinez is throwing long lead left hooks, hitting Hampton on the bicep as he circles away from them. Martinez is aiming for Hampton's head with the jab and just buzzing his sideburns as Hampton begins to pull a page from Martinez's book and perform a quick lean-aside while in transit. Hampton is grinning at Martinez tauntingly now, as though he's taking solace in the Pyrrhic victory (and maybe counting unhatched chickens) of making the final bell. Hampton is pushing his gum shield partially out and breaking into a playful gallop while pumping weak jabs into the air. Body shot by Martinez, partially scoring from outside. Delayed reaction knockdown. Ten seconds left. Hampton is up and saved by the bell, running.
