This would have felt like an absurd matchup a couple of years ago but with the way Crawford has carried the weight up, I think it’s an interesting one. Nonetheless, Hagler is still the naturally bigger man and has all the tools Crawford does and then some, so I have to pick Hagler - but it’s not a crazy matchup anymore.
It's still a mismatch. Crawford fought a Canelo on the slide and even so Canelo is hardly a good measure for someone like Hagler. Big fan of Crawford who's been a bright spot in a lackluster sport that just isn't what it used to be. Just watched Hagler-Mugabi yesterday for the first time in a while and I'm still impressed with both men in that bout. Mugabi would flourish in today's game. We're going with Hagler, big time.
Hagler was a middleweight from day one. Crawford started at lightweight - there’s no way Hagler would ever have made lightweight even with day before weigh ins.
Crawford cuts more weight than Hagler. Crawford walks around a similar size to Hagler. Crawford as a welterweight was at least 160 pounds in the ring, so objectively a peak Crawford is also a middleweight compared to Hagler
When most posters are writing about a boxer being bigger, they are generally referring to what weight the "bigger " Fighter was at his most effective. Crawford may be the same size as Hagler now, but he started at , and was his most effective between lightweight and welterweight. Conversely Hagler was a middleweight from the beginning of his career to the end. Thus, Hagler is seen (Rightfully so) as the bigger fighter. When Hagler fought Duràn he was the bigger Fighter though they were roughly the same size. But most boxing fans know Duràn's best fighting weight was between 135 and 145. But it wouldn't have mattered in any case , because prime Hagler was simply a much better fighter than Crawford is at any point in his career. So with Hagler being the better fighter, and naturally bigger man, He'd stop Crawford with in 10 rds tops.cd
You have made some interesting points, but WW in today's era, would have been like JMW-MW in Marvin's era. Marvin also sometimes used to weight well below 160, back in the days of same day weigh-ins. Sometimes he used to weigh-in at 157 pounds. So again, we have WW's and JMW's as big today. Marvin was great. But a stoppage win is a big call. How many guys did Marvin fight of Terence' size, with those skills and style? Fights against Marvin and the rest of the 'Four' would have been very intriguing.
It is interesting to me that Crawford, on the back of beating Canelo, is considered to be one of the greatest ever. By people that have, for years and on this very forum, diminished every Canelo victory because he's either a weight bully or because the judges had their scorecards filled out before the fight started. He has been disparaged in every was imaginable but now, suddenly, beating him makes you the best of the best.
This is getting ludicrous. Beating a shot Canelo, yes SHOT, who was custom made for your style doesn't even get you into the nosebleed seats in the ball park where you ask if he could beat Hagler. This content is protected
I didn't. Canelo carried the torch after Mayweather, never actually got a gift, never was actually proven to have used steroids, and was bigger than Crawford and in good form.
