Terrance Crawford only won because he was a larger fighter tonight

It wasn't just that Crawford was bigger, although he definitely was. Gamboa was boxing his ears off in the first few rounds, even though Crawford was bigger. What made a difference was Crawford knows how to make adjustments and maximize his strengths and Gamboa doesn't. Crawford got Gamboa's timing and was hitting him coming in, stepping back to make Gamboa have further to punch, and clinching with him when Gamboa got inside.

That's textbook stuff. Crawford out thought Gamboa tonight. Gamboa could have made adjustments of his own but he didn't. Instead of fighting smart and covering up when he was hurt he decided to mix it up and he got knocked out. He could have changed his tempo when Crawford got his timing, or tried different angles, or a couple of different things. Instead, Gamboa's plan devolved into throwing bombs and hoping one lands. He lost the battle of technique. Simple as that.

Kind of reminds me of Zab Judah vs Floyd Mayweather.

Funny how with all you guys it's always one thing and one thing only instead of a combination of different factors.

 

There were a number of factors at play. Size was a considerable one, and it's foolish to ignore that. The two looked like they were at least a weightclass apart in the ring, and that disparity had an impact on the fight strategy for both men. The other X factor on fight strategy was homefield advantage. Crawford could afford to box conservatively; Gamboa needed to take more risks to win on the road.

Gamboa had to be more aggressive and dart in and out because otherwise, he wouldn't have come close to being able to score enough to win. Crawford's size gave him the luxury of being able to sit back, get Gamboa's timing down, and counter without being too hurt by the flush power shots he ate in the meantime. The homefield advantage meant that, even though he was down on my card when the knockdown came, the judges didn't see it that way.

Crawford fought very smartly and utilized the physical advantages he had. Gamboa fought a smarter fight than he's being given credit for- he utilized his speed and skill advantage for as long as he could, and he took enough risks to have won in the other man's back yard. It didn't pay off for him because he couldn't hide his chin for the full 12, but those are the chances he needed to take.

The victory wasn't just about size, but it was the size differential and homefield advantage that drove Crawford's (and Gamboa's) fight strategy, which he still gets credit for executing against a very game, very good smaller fighter in Gamboa.

 

I just about see tears streaming down your face in that post. Gamboa has no divine right to win fights. No one forced him to fight at lightweight, so then if he loses fair and square in a lightweight fight, this is deserved.

 

Size wasn't the only factor, the biggest factor was Gamboa's recklessness.

This fight would had went the same way if he had fought Mikey. Boa needs to clean house and its as simple as that.

Why is Crawford getting no credit for his skill. Size was a small factor. Is not like he walked him down and wore him out. He out skilled the **** out of him with his jab and accurate counter punching. The way he figured out his timing and distance was beautiful. I called it to.i could see Crawford waiting for it and trying to figure him out. Gambia just couldn't adjust.
