It is really bad, there is hardly anything about the fight! Poor. Anyway - here are some bullet points drawn from it.

    - it was the "last major fight to the finish"

    - the two had fought a "30 round mauling draw" two months earlier

    - Georges Carpantier missed the fight :dead

    - McVey was the heavier of the two, and the younger. He droped Jaenette hard in the very first round with a left hook

    - Jeanette was ditched a further 21 times in the next 19 rounds

    - Jeanette's trainer, Willie Lewis, was threatened with jail by ringisde police for continuing to send his man out to contend the fight with McVey

    - both men used "oxygen bags" in their respective corners

    - the tide began to turn in the 18th.

    - Jeanette need massage to his legs from the 30th onwards

    - time keeper Jim Pratt - "Finally, after the minutes folowing the 48th round, Sma McVey rose pitifully and walked, with his guard lowerd, his left hand fractured and his right hand held against his stomach, towards Jeanette. I heard the words clearly: 'I beleive I cannot do anything more. You have won Joe...' Sam had lost this historic, last battle to a finish but most honourable retirement in the 49th round."

What do you gents know of this fight?

.........It's too bad that Georges Carpentier wasn't there to see it, that's what I say.

"There were no free seats...so we stood dejectedly outside in the streets and tried to follow what was happening from the noise of the crowd...we munched croissants and spoke in outragous French accents to pass the time."

    Georges Carpentier

I may have made up the last part.

...........This is a bitter thread indeed. Rueful memories of loss. Sometimes I wonder why I follow this godforsaken sport.

I don't think that's right. McVey almost scored a knockout in the 20th and 21st rounds. He was in the ascendency until the 40th. One of the great great fights/comebacks I'd say.

Not read the article. That bad is it? Who wrote it, James Slater? :)

"...around the 18th round a doctor with an oxygen bag [appeared]...from that point on "we were watching the resurrection of Joe Jeanette...leaping from his stool, hammering Sam about the flanks"."

Not sure though. It is bad.

Neil Allen. I was all excited about this article and read it in the supermarket carpark. It's ****.
