What are your guys' feelings about Tim? He's one of my favorite boxers and someone I'd consider a hard matchup for anyone in the division. His resume is pretty great, even going up through the mid 90s with few losses (And a robbery against Mercer), the can opener is no joke. How do you rank him all time head to head? Who would be the best heavyweight that he'd be able to beat?
Great skills, poor training, drug addiction, inconsistent, didn't accomplish what he could have. He really could have got back into at just the right time, right before Douglas upset Tyson.
Honestly I think a prime Witherspoon could maybe beat an early 90s version of Lewis, Witherspoon had a good jab good defense and a potent over hand right which Lewis was suspect to. As for where I rate Witherspoon ? I'd rate him at his best somewhere along the lines of top 5 for the 80s Heavyweights. And probably in the top 30-35 in regards to all time Heavyweight rankings.
Immensely talented, he uses crazy high level concepts in his defense including 52 blocks and other sweet cross guard modifications, as far as technique, the guy was ****ing awesome. When I work the bag I practice techniques I observed with Tim Witherspoon (I'm no pro, but I think his ideas were really smart). I can't judge a man for losing on purpose on a personal level, I don't care, but on a fan level it offends me, the whole Brian Nielsen fight was such a farce it disgusts me.
Definitely. If McCall could do it, Witherspoon would've done so in a more dominant fashion. But damn, that just makes me think of a Witherspoon with Emanuel Steward in his corner. Jesus, that would be a dream come true.
I think you missed him. He was around here posting for a bit I even got to swap some DMs with him overall a cool cat.
He would've fought Tyson if he wasn't dealing with Don King's **** in '86, he was in the middle of a court case with King and didn't have the time to train, and came in horribly against Smith, who he previously schooled easily. Past that, he went unbeaten for 12 matches against decent opposition, including an unbeaten Mike Williams, the hard hitting Jeff Sims, Jose "El Nino" Ribalta, and Carl "The Truth" Williams, before dropping a decision to Everett Martin, and going unbeaten for another 7. In that time, he knocked out Jorge Luis Gonzalez in a four headliner event, and went 10 rounds with Ray Mercer in a complete robbery. If he was given the decision, he might've fought Lewis at The Lion's own peak. And past that, he didn't really have much left, going 50/50 for the next 7 years against decent opposition, including Andrew Golota, Larry Donald, Jimmy Thunder, and Brian Neilsen.
He definitely seemed like he could lose inspiration in certain fights, such as against Pinklon Thomas.
That sucks, but maybe he'll come around some other time. I see him decently active when it comes to responding to people on the internet, such as on Youtube and such, but who knows. Tim definitely seems like a cool guy. I love the videos on his channel teaching technique.
