Terry Downes and East London hardman Roy Shaw

This thread made me rewatch the few unlicensed fights on YouTube that McLean and the others had under Fr.ank W@rren's WBN. Fr@nk was a big unlicensed promoter back then.

Watching the fights you can see there isn't much skill involved. A good domestic level boxer would have cleaned up against McLean and Shaw etc.

I always got the feeling Bartley Gorman could have gone down the East End cobbles and wiped out all the co.ckney hard men in one evening without breaking a sweat.


All vicious men of course who between them must have killed a few men with their bare hands.

 

Most of these hardmen get reps off punching drunk people at bars.

 

It doesn't matter what sport or occupation it is, a professional will always be better than an amateur. It's their job, they do it every day so it's only natural that they will be good at it.

 

very true, have see it often in Glasgow, when the so called hardman wont volunteer a rematch when his victim is sober, but people forget that and fact guy was drunk and just remember the fact he knocked guy out and is well hard ! lol

 

Mclean was no world class boxer but he would bite your nose off in a clinch... thats the difference

Fantasies of English men. They where fat messes who where 'ard' locally, but would have, and did have the **** kicked out of them when they fought someone with skills.

 

What's with certain gypsy familys constantly banging on about being the 'best traveller man' and 'the king of the gypsys' etc.. surely no questions asked the best man of all travellers is Tyson Fury.

 

Quality thread....thought when i seen it not another one. This is going to be embarrasing for all involved. But you always end up getting sucked in to it every single time. Reckon these guys were hard men. Bullys and liberty takers but hard men all the same. None of them would have lasted in a boxing ring against the pro's but a lot of them would have done well in street fights against them. Size as much as people dont want to believe it is a big thing if the big man can fight a bit. It's only useless when you've got a big guy that doesnt know what he's doing. Whatever odd's the guys giving out on degale to beat mclean in a street fight...i ll take a hundred on mclean!
