Is this run the greatest run in boxing ever (Harry Greb included) This run featured (by my rough count): 29 wins 26 wins by knockout with just 3 other wins being 6 rounders that went the distance. 8 Winning world championship fights at 2 different weight divisions. KO wins over all time great fighters includes Joe Gans, George Dixon, Pedlar Palmer, Frank Erne 17 KOs in the first 3 rounds. No Losses Can anyone think of a better run of form in a 2 year period?
Dont give him credit for it then. But answer the question. That run doesnt need Joe Gans to be impressive.
Great fighter I've been reading about him but despite the names it can't be considered a greater achievement that Robinsons streak after losing a close fight to Lamotta in their second fight.
That is an amazing run. McGovern was a Tyson like terror, but unlike Tyson he beat better competition. Like Tyson he quickly faded from the scene after his first KO loss.
The film shows McGovern hit Gans flush, his knees buckle then he falls. McGovern then jumps on him sometimes hitting him hard, other times not so hard. But unless you can tell how hurt Gans was, this fix business comes mostly from people who liked or bet on Gans. Gans was a boxer puncher type. His style weakness was vs an aggressive attacker, which McGovern was. Gans for all his skills was stopped twice prior to the McGovern match, and both were lesser punchers. If this was a fix, which other fixes did Gans participate in?
Harry Forbes went unbeaten over 36 fights between mid 1900 and mid 1903 and made 6 title defences beating the likes of Abe Atell and Dan Doherty. 24 of those fights and 5 title defences were fought in a 2 year period. Still, most were points victories. Not as impressive but comparable.
Jimmy wilde went unbeaten in 24 with seven title defenses over the likes of Tancy Lee in the space of one year between 1915 and 1916.
Barney Rosswent unbeaten in 35 over less than 3 years with 11 title defences over three weight classes with victories over the likes of Tony Canzoneri, Jimmy Mclarnin and Billy petrolle.
Henry armstrong went unbeaten over 45 fights in 25 months with 14 title defences between January 1937 and may 1939 whilst holding three out of seven world titles simultaneously with victories over the likes of Lou Ambers, Barney Ross and Benny Bass among other notable fighters.
