Look, I'm no expert but there's been a ton written about it in books. There was tons written about in in newspapers at the time. There was a lot of discussion about it among newspapermen and lawmakers in Chicago in the years after the event. Lots of people were questioned about it. Lots of denials, lots of confessions, lots of accusations. There are some good boxing historians who specialize in Gans, the era, and Chicago boxing. Go ask them. I doubt you'll find them saying it was on the level. It was a fixed fight. Like the 1919 World Series was fixed. If Siler was "fond" of Gans, I don't see how that would make him come out immediately straight away and accuse Gans of faking fights !
Never seen a fixed fight where the losing opponent goes down 5 times before getting counted out. Why keep getting up?
There is a fair amount of controversy concerning that fight that remains to this day, some are convinced that Gans threw the fight, while others maintain that McGovern won it fair and square. There is not doubt Gans was hit flush and hard a few times on film. Some of them were real head snapping shots. There was some controversy in Gans vs Nelson. Apparently Nelson was turning the tides and Gans was tired when it was stopped on a foul. Open Pandora's box. What other fixed fight did Gans participate in? The author of a Gans book( Ay**** ) writes So the door swings both ways on this fix business. Did Gans ever admit the fight was fixed?
Yes, the door swings both ways on crooked fights. It's likely some of his wins were fixed, or he carried his opponents, and all sorts of funny business. Mayweather-Pacquiao was a bit fake too, but no one seems to care. talk about "booking a rematch" ... expect another mega-billion fight next year. They're doing business.
I felt there was a good chance for BS on the cards between Mayweather and Pacquiao. A SD or Draw that would force the re-match. Now its an injury that wasn't reported. And Manny is being sued. Ugh. Agreeing to a fix is perhaps the worst thing in boxing. It casts a shroud of doubt over a fighters career. For some reason, Primo Carnera gets grilled, but others ( Gans ) do not.
Perry, right on target. why would a fighter get blasted and floored FIVE times to fix a fight ? And if it was a fixed fight, why hasn't reputation of Joe Gans been as targeted as Jack Dempsey's questionable ko at the hands of fireman Jim Flynn in 1917 ?.. Or Jack Sharkey's knockout at the hands of light hitting Primo Carnera ?:hi:
