Norris and quite handily. Just a bad style match-up for Duran. Norris has many SRL qualities plus he is naturally bigger. The fast flurries of Norris will be a big issue throughout the fight.
there's just too much speed involved here let's not forget this in not your mother's Hands of stone fighting at 135, proud and indomitable instead, we have a more gentrified, sissyfied, more technical yet still plodding version that lost to not much Benitez, & Kirkland laing Roberto would have to fight and fight like he's never fought before if he expects to win. If he fights passively as he did in the benitez fight, he might as well lie down for Terry Norris could run into trouble if he gets overconfident but if he sticks to his plan and stays on his toes without coming across as sugar rey lennard, he gets what should be an entertaining points win
Using Davey Moore as a barometer isn't all that effective. Do you see those Norris punches missing a face first target like that? Of course Roberto looked real good in that----that is not a defense to break down. Like he had to do with Benetiz and Hearns. Moore leaves automatic openings for every opponent. Terry Norris does not leave openings like that. Roberto will have to solve the defense and deal with the handspeed to land his counters. That's about as easy as it gets with Davey Moore. And it still took 8 rounds because Moore is no quitter and will hang tough. Roberto did well facing the face first guys like Moore and Barkley. The results are not so good against the others. I don't like, but love, Norris going away. I don't think Duran wins 2 rounds and would be fortunate to make the final bell. It'd be a major league licking he'd be taking in there.
Norris should win a decision. I don't think Duran had the power at 154 lbs. to seriously dent his chin. He would have to land an accumulation to hurt Norris. I think Norris would use his legs and hand speed to win a decision, something like 8-4.
Good point about styles making fights, but the fact remains that Norris' jaw wasn't the best and his boxing IQ couldn't match Duran's. Duran was so hit or miss above 147, but when he was on, he was capable of great performances. Brown stopped Norris, and I have no doubt that an "on" Duran could outsmart and out tough Terry as well.
But what we saw w/ Roberto at 154 was exactly how many A+ performances? He was not going to land those shots for the 2 rounds he lasted with Tommy. Not even close. He had Benetiz in front of him all night. And Benetiz is sort of similar to Norris in the chin department---if you hit it clean things do happen. But you have to do things to get to that stage 180 degrees different than Davey Moore. The opponent best suited for Roberto back then was Ayala. He held that left hand cradled at his waist. He never did pick it up. That aurtomatic opening for those Duran rights. But I think Roberto takes that guy because it is a dangerous guy and he'd whip himself into top shape. But he did not bother to do that in the Leonard rematch. Laing. Benetiz. So there are far more instances of being flat than razor sharp. Come to think of it, Simon Brown at 147 is no easy night's work for Roberto. Maybe the deteriorated guy at 154. Or a Felix Trinidad. I love the Norris handspeed a lot more than any chin advantage Duran has. Or ringsmarts. That keeps him in the fight, but not much more.
