John McDermott in a recent BN interview said something he would change in boxing was the money. He gave the example of a £4,000 purse for a defence now, and compared it to the Spinks purse in the thread title. Is this true?
Dunno about the amounts Colin but Spinks was an Olympic gold medalist and the Area titles were a lot more highly regared back then as well but that said, theres no record of Spinks contesting an area title on Boxrec....maybe McD meant British title?
Spinks was hot property that is an awful lot of money back then but Spinks was the darling of British boxing at the time so not entirely impossible.
He got the info from his personal BN archive and having written a Spinks piece for our centenary bookazine I am pretty sure he is right. The 4k he referred to was not purses now but the price of a house in Spinks' day
I suppose comparatively you could use the potential Groves Degale matchup as an example if it goes to purse bids Degale another Olympic gold medallist will be getting 60% i think? The purse for this fight will be in the hundreds of thousands the price of a house
