Antonio Dubose vs. Jesus Gonzalez, 4 rounds @ featherweight

 

Round 1

Dubose moves in and blindsides the sluggish Gonzalez with a left hook, and Gonzalez is down. Up, circling, hands up, Gonzalez looks vulnerable. Dubose comes straight at him letting punches go, 1-2-3, and he is down again. Up once more. Another hook. Third knockdown will do it.

Kassim Ouma vs. Rahman Mustafa Yusubov, 6 rounds @ light middleweight

 

Round 1

Yusubov is sweeping out a wide right on the body while crab-stepping in, left arm low and chin exposed. Push-jab by Yusubov coming forward, winging that wide looping right downstairs. Ouma is squatting and bouncing up to pop southpaw jabs into the mouth of Yusubov. Ouma is ducking and rolling in the pocket and striding in semicircles around Yusubov to reset. Lead right, left hook by Yusubov landing flush and jolting Ouma, making his dreads stand on end. Ouma shakes it off and drives Yusubov off with a series of short right hooks, following through and grinding his right forearm into Yusubov for extra heave.

Round 2

Yusubov is ducking and straightening in place, raising his left forearm crossed horizontally to catch Ouma's right jabs. Left hook by Yusubov pressing forward. Ouma is circling right and then shoving forward, putting his left arm out like a pool-cue to shoot Yusubov across the ring. Big left hook by Yusubov whipped over the jab of Ouma. Another, doubled up. Left hook flush, right hand blocked, double left hook flush. Yusubov is scoring regularly - almost exclusively with that left hook - and managing to come forward, shaking Ouma's head around sharply as he lands two and three hooks in a row. Ouma is grabbing at Yusubov's left arm, trying to hold it down, but Yusubov is squirming free and whipping those hooks into the side of Ouma's face.

Round 3

Yusubov is throwing big slow overhand rights to make Ouma duck in to hold, then slamming him with the left hook on the starboard of the skull. Ouma is poking his right jab out of a high tight peekaboo, trying to lean in on Yusubov. Big left hooks to the face and looping rights to the kidneys by Yusubov catching Ouma grinding in. NICE uppercut by Ouma. They slug on the inside and both are landing their preferred weapons, Yusubov the left hook above Ouma's temple and Ouma the big right uppercut planted on the flat underside of Yusubov's jaw. Ouma is faster and perhaps more accurate but throwing less than a third of what Yusubov is pouring on him, and Yusubov's punches have equally as much impact on Ouma as Ouma's do on him if not more.

Round 4

Yusubov is throwing big left hooks from outside and spinning around with the misses. Yusubov adjusts, now sticking the jab between Ouma's eyes on the way in and then hooking into his face up close. Ouma is looking very hittable, a second behind the ball on defense. Big hooks by Yusubov coming up onto the balls of his feet on the inside. Ouma shoeshines the body. Big right hooks and left crosses by Ouma lunging in, flopping into a clinch as Yusubov waves his arms in a wild but effective preventative screen. Ouma wrestles inside and gets hooked in the neck. Shoeshine to the body by Ouma, mostly caught on the lowered arms of Yusubov. Ouma is shoved back one-armed by Yusubov and then hit with a hook and right hand. They press in close and clinch. Break. Cuffing right hook by Ouma, elbow scraping the back of Yusubov's neck. This round has now gone a minute over three. What is the official timekeeper doing? Four minute round. They are tiptoeing around each other and slugging point-blank with light taps on the body. Arm punches both ways.

Round 5

Yusubov is standing pat in front of Ouma, harpooned with a left hand lead to the belly. Ouma is bending over and tossing jabs and crosses onto the belt line of Yusubov. Ouma is back to ducking and rolling as in the 1st. Yusubov is leading with the left hook from outside, but Ouma is sliding backward and making him miss and increasingly lunge. NICE straight counter left by Ouma. Yusubov is hooking and pumping in throat-level 1-2s before even beginning to step into Ouma, pantomiming combinations but not measuring the distance or taking proper aim. Ouma is swaying back above the waist, head tilted with chin pointed upward and dodging the 1-2 and then dipping forward to drum on Yusubov's middle with body counters.

Round 6

Yusubov stands in the middle of the ring again, waiting for Ouma. Straight left stuffed low under the gathered arms by Ouma. Right hooks on the ear by Ouma pressing in close after using the left downstairs while bent over to pave the way. Yusubov is waving his left jab in the air ineffectively. Ouma is putting up the goalposts while ducking and rolling, catching the resurgent looping right of Yusubov on his left wrist. Ouma leans in and works the body. Straight flurry to the face by Ouma driving Yusubov into the ropes. Ouma covers up just in time as Yusubov abruptly loops in a hard right, smashing into Ouma's left forearm once more and skidding off as Ouma ducks and turns with it. Ouma lands a short slapping right hook while shoving and elbowing Yusubov into a corner. They spin and switch places and Yusubov tosses in straight punches, all blocked. Ouma covers up and blocks the hooks, tossing in light pot shot counters. Low blow by Yusubov.

The commentators (Michael Mittman & Larry Holmes) both call that an early Christmas present for Ouma. :yep

Like me, they had this very close and saw Ouma losing a few in the middle.

 

Tevin Farmer vs. Carlos Vinan, 8 rounds @ lightweight

 

Round 1

Farmer is sticking the fast right jab into Vinan's face, mixing in some 1-2s and keeping mobile on the outside, not lingering inside Vinan's range. Vinan is rocking his upper body away, hoping to slip the jab but still taking it on the face, and swerving in with left hooks and high sloping right hands. Farmer is catching everything on a perpendicular guard, right arm curled around his chest and left bent in tight with the elbow at his side and fist straight above it by his chin. Vinan has a cut on his forehead.
