Tevin Farmer vs. Jonathan Baresford, 12 rounds @ super featherweight

 

Round 1

Baresford comes out jabbing at his fellow southpaw with the right tentatively. Farmer taking rickety baby-steps counter-clockwise, putting out a plethora of quick right hands, both jabs & hooks, none aimed particularly carefully and few landing, just keeping a blur in Baresford's face. A few well located body shots by Farmer, but his lefts hands up top fall short as Baresford hops backward. Nice left uppercut from Baresford in an exchange as Farmer lands a right hook on the belt line heel-toeing inside. Long lead left uppercut on the body by Farmer. Baresford rushes Farmer into the ropes and gets his right arm trapped under Farmer's left but keeps bashing the outer hip with his own free left until the ref forces a break. Nice right hook on the body by Baresford at the bell.

Round 2

Baresford shells up as Farmer comes dashing in with a quadruple right jab, pecking at the forearms. Baresford is carrying himself all the way inside with the momentum of a wide right hook, sailing in and bodying up against Farmer on the ropes and dropping his fists to his waist to curl in short body shots. Farmer is pushing out the right jab slowly, lulling Baresford, nudging the pinky edge of his glove padding with the jab over and over like a cat snurgling a blanket with dreamy absent-mindedness while drifting laterally to Baresford's left, hoping to angle up for a big left hand on the body, keeping it cocked and ready. Baresford, however, is having none of it, and doesn't let Farmer get the distance he needs to cut loose, pressing in and working right hooks from abdomen to chin and plugging the lefts into the gut as well. Farmer counters with quick pokes of his own but can't shake Baresford.

Round 3

Baresford is unable to cross the shark-populated moat to storm the castle (the sharks are speedy left uppercuts from long range, which Farmer has dialed in, landing on the same precise spot on the navel with consistent accuracy). Farmer covers up as Baresford pounces on him with left uppercuts on the body and right hooks up top, but everything clangs off the right thigh or left elbow, Farmer tightening up his inside defense. Farmer now countering with right hooks clipping Baresford on the chin as he bulldozes in. They slug a bit on the DAZN logo, and Farmer is able to slip all of Baresford's headhunting. When he reinvests on the midsection, Baresford is more successful, connecting in multiples. Farmer is picking Baresford off at mid-range with right jabs and left uppercuts, compacting the beard. Flurry on the body from Baresford, swatting Farmer with a right hook on the side but he is countered with a big left, but takes it well.

Round 4

Baresford is staying on top of Farmer, pushing down into his left cheek with an oil-rigging southpaw jab from above, then checking his escape route with a staying left hand on the chest. Farmer is caught between the constantly whirring fists of Baresford for a few moments before slithering away into the open space in center ring. Farmer now carries his right fist dangling by his knee while circling wide, throwing pot shot jabs. Baresford heads him off and bundles his arms in front of his chest, fists at his chin, whipping out roundhouse body shots, clipping Farmer beneath & behind the elbows. Farmer connecting on some left uppercuts but can't shake Baresford off him. Farmer is producing very little, but his output is offset by a very high connect rate. He lands a flush right check hook after the ten second clap, brilliant shot, turned Baresford's head around violently - but still not enough to steal it, Farmer simply didn't work enough.

Round 5

Baresford is getting stamped between the eyes with a right jab every time he takes a step forward as Farmer executes quick sorties and then recedes with the outgoing tide. Baresford manages to herd Farmer into the ropes but can't accomplish much once there, Farmer squirming free and countering with right jabs on the nose. Farmer keeps trying for the left uppercut while spiraling to his right, creating ever more distance, but missing with it, by inches. Farmer takes a step in past a Baresford jab and finds the range on the left uppercut at last, dinging him with it. Now a straight left by Farmer loosens Baresford's gum shield. Time in, they lean together and both slap on the body. Overhand left by Farmer just misses as Baresford scuttles backward. They resume infighting and Baresford scores a glancing chopper of a right hook. Good action down the stretch here. Farmer picking off lots of shots and countering with jabs and uppercuts. Great head movement by Farmer.

Round 6

Baresford is lunging in with the right jab and coming up empty-handed as Farmer ducks and shimmies without ever ceasing to shuffle his feet. Nice short counters by Farmer during the brief periods of infighting, just enough to keep Baresford from swallowing him up in a partial clinch (to bash with a free hand, as seems to be the MO for Baresford) or simply push down on him to limit his movement and sap his energy. Farmer working the right hook downstairs especially well, leaning over rightward and bending too low for Baresford to reach him with his plumbing shots. BIG looping lead left from outside by Farmer, smacks Baresford flush across the kisser. Farmer now comfortably picking Baresford off at range with the southpaw jab. Baresford can't get close to him.

Round 7

Baresford is plodding after Farmer, eating jabs, but manages a risky long swipe downstairs with the right hook and it pays dividends, making Farmer grimace as he scurries away. Baresford is missing big line drive lefts up top past the head, and trying pendulous right hooks into the ribs but only hitting elbows as Farmer tucks up. Good defense by Farmer but ninety seconds in he is yet to really fire anything in return. A few lackadaisical lead lefts by Farmer, buried into the guard of Baresford. They now lean together, in Baresford's wheelhouse, as Farmer appears to have tired of circling. Baresford now landing some body shots and short lefts sunk directly into the lazy eye. Farmer is slapping very ineffectively, not sure what the Sky commentators are talking about saying he's landing the more accurate shots at the moment or 'boxing rather beautifully' - he was in the previous two rounds but certainly not here.

Round 8

Baresford is just standing pat and keeping his fists bunched under his chin, rotating like a weathervane as Farmer dances around him poking with right jabs from outside and mostly coming nowhere close. Baresford manages to grind in close and works some left uppercuts into the chin and throat. Right hooks whipped around the arms, landing on the small of Farmer's back and his flank. Farmer is scoring with the odd scooping left uppercut, but getting by and large drowned by the volume of Baresford. Farmer taking frequent rests laying against Baresford. Shoeshine on the face by Baresford, then a pair of hooks while leaning back a bit to gain the necessary space. They're both slapping and missing or landing inconsequentially, neither with any snap whatsoever.

Round 9

Baresford is jabbed in the face and tries opening up an exchange but is CRACKED with a right hook turning his face around sharply, the rare shot Farmer chooses to sit down on. Baresford walks Farmer into the ropes, stepping diagonally to cut off his escape, and whips some right hooks downstairs. Looping lefts by Baresford, taken on the backside as Farmer curls in toward him (ie not a legal scoring blow, although it probably knocked some wind from Farmer). Jabs and slick head & upper body movement by Farmer but not much offense. Short left uppercut on the belt line by Farmer. Baresford rolls under a jab & hook from Farmer and gets a few touches on the body. Baresford spears in an underhanded left above the hip. Right hooks and left uppercuts downstairs by Baresford, about two dozen unanswered, terrific effort, but regrettably for him zero landed clean, Farmer rolling with everything on the ropes, arms splayed out to deflect whatever doesn't skid off the non-legal area of his trunks (below the waistband)

10-9 Farmer, close - the Sky commentators, oddly dismissive of Baresford's work earlier, think it was his best round, on the basis of "quality", eh, not really. Way busier and more aggressive than Farmer as usual but he missed boat loads (and/or was blocked). Commentators act like Farmer took off the whole round but forget he landed several vicious shots early, that was enough in the bank honestly, given how few Baresford landed despite his furor the rest of the way.

Round 10

Baresford is eating jabs from the outside and short right upper-hooks inside as he keeps pressing in. Farmer snaps Baresford's head back repeatedly but can't dissuade him. Baresford is surging in, throwing nonstop, but Farmer keeps slipping & countering. Farmer more accurate by quite a large margin, but still missing plenty of jabs himself. Not a very tidy round as both men are tired. Farmer content to just flutter the right jab out while prancing away, not caring if he misses ten in a row so long as it gives Baresford pause. Farmer misses a left uppercut and right hook as Baresford weaves his way in, trying to barrel into Farmer, using his body as a missile to pin him into the ropes. Jab on the body, right hook up top by Farmer, flush.

Round 11

Baresford is delayed answering the bell, loose tape on his glove. Farmer is holding Baresford off with the big rocketing left hand from the hip. Baresford walks into two in a row. Farmer is knifing Baresford on the nose with the jab and drifting in either direction, making the Irishman miss. Body shots from Baresford as Farmer briefly rests on the ropes. Farmer is casually strolling across the ring from one set of ropes into the next, resting, twisting around with his arms covering his body as Baresford pummels away downstairs, getting a few licks in but mostly hitting non-legal scoring areas like the kidney and thigh. Farmer is able to lean in, slipping a pair of Baresford jabs, and score a left uppercut. BIG RIGHT HOOK BY FARMER! Baresford wobbling badly, almost down. Farmer runs him into a corner. Farmer a bit overexcited going for the finish, misses a bunch of shots. Now a big chopping left, hurts Baresford again. Baresford clinches until the bell.

Round 12

Baresford is still clearing the cobwebs from the eleventh, skipping away, getting sniped by right jabs. Farmer is walking him down, looking to clobber him with a left hand over the top. Baresford is pumping out slow, weak right jabs, doubling them up, pushing a left cross through, fighting on adrenaline, very brave yet achieving nothing. His only saving grace is that Farmer is too gassed or mired in safety-first mentality to fully go for the kill. Baresford loading up on big wrecking balls into the body with both hands, but with virtually nothing on them. Farmer himself only capable of weak slapping right hooks splashing ineffectually off the side of Baresford's head. Baresford reaches around behind Farmer's left elbow and plants a few right hands on the kidneys. Farmer slips a jab and shoeshines the body. They clinch and wrestle. Baresford shakes free with a thrust of his left arm. Some light body shots by Baresford. BIG left uppercut into the gut by Farmer, making Baresford gasp and hold. They slug until the bell.
