I was scouting thorugh the Philly online for a report on the Chambers fight....couldn't see a thing on it... however I did stumble across this little gem about the legendary Tex Cobb: http://www.philly.com/inquirer/front_page/20080126_Pugilist__thespian_-_now_a_scholar.html What a legend this guy is! I remember someone put a bunch of his quotes up on this board ages ago...feel free to post some more!
Hey, ol' Tex is looking good! He's a really interesting and intelligent guy, and genuinely funny. Where was I - I forget which forum now - his ex-wife was posting there.
I was over in Abilene, TX during the summer and the College was still talking about Tex in the nude launching flaming arrows into another dorm. And that was 30 years ago that took place.
I really like "Tex" Cobb, and I have to admit growing up I watched him in tons of movies my dad liked and had only recently learned since joining ESB that he actually was a Pro Boxer. Cool stuff with out doubt. Very entertaining man.
Good for Tex. He's one of boxing's "good guys." Nice to hear things have turned out allright for him! :good
Yo Tayor, where is this taking place?? I'll be there with your back to STFU some dumbasses who don't even have a clue who you are!!!:smoke
That's pretty cool! He looks slightly mentally ******ed in the pic though. I sure wouldn't want to tell him that though being he could still kick my ass I am sure. It should send a message though if Tex Cobb can do it you can do it.
Tex looks way better in that photo than I've ever seen him. This guy has accomplished at leas two significant feats. Graduating with honors is great but I'm more impressed that Cobb also caused Howard Cossell to cut his ties with professional boxing. Of course, Larry Holmes had something to do with it.
"...Cobb raised his hand. Most boxers wind up with a fraction of the money they earned in their careers. "I would like to be a part of the boxing reform that could change that," Cobb said. "Boxing is the only major sport that doesn't have a pension or a retirement [plan]. These guys spend their whole life doing something, and they can't continue to make a living at some point." Too true. Boxing has always been corrupt, and instead of getting better it is now worse then ever. In your face mobsters like Don King and the various Mafiyas and the tv networks run the so-called sport and siphon off all the profits.
Tex looks great, more like age 34 than 54! It says he was working in construction. No more acting gigs? The only movie I saw him in was "Raising Arizona". He was terrific in that - the motorcycle rider from Hell!
I've only seen him fight...never seen any of his movies. If some kind gent would give me a list it would be nice. His toughness evened up for his lack of skill. He is the funniest boxer since Rocky Graziano, who was often on talk shows late 50's through into the 70's. Both were tougher than nails. In the top 2 of all time in funny boxing quotes by boxers....could be the Champ at that. I've read some 20 quotes by him that were good.
