Tex Cobb v Dee Collier

I've asked and looked for a long time and got nothing ... very strange fight ...

 

It exists. I've seen it. The fight took place at the Reseda Country Club, which is right up the street from my house. It was under the auspices of Ten Goose Boxing. They're in North Hollywood. If you call them or get in touch with any of the Goosens I'm sure they would have the footage.

I remember thinking at the time that Cobb's chin had failed him. It didn't look like a tank job. But who knows?

 

The reports say Cobb got caught early and never recovered.
I doubt he would have thrown the fight, since he was being lined up as an opponent for Michael Spinks and the IBF title.

Dee Collier was a tough fighter if I remember rightly. Him and Mark Wills, very dangerous journeymen from California.

 

Tex needed coke money, and got it. Maybe, he already had it in his system.

Gregg-Cobb was televised five months earlier, and I was not convinced by that ninth round knockdown. The only thing I thought was impressive or memorable about it is the fact of who fell to his knees against the ropes. (Consider too that it was Tex against the ropes. How often did you see ANYBODY put Cobb's back against the ropes?)

"It's one thing to call me white and slow. But to call me a fat, cocaine snorting, fight fixing cheat! Who are they calling fat?"...

This one was in Collier's California, at the Country Club in Reseda. Referee Lou Filippo passed in November 2009. I'd have loved to hear his take on this one. Tex was undefeated in the final 20 bouts of his career (albeit against nondescript opposition except for a 1988 MD over Leon Spinks, the only one of those 20 bouts that went the limit).

So far as I'm concerned, Collier-Cobb has the stink of Firehose Flynn-Dempsey I all over it.

However, Frankie Duarte was in the semifinal of that card, and kikibalt just posted a photograph of him posing with Chacon and some unhappy looking lady. Mr. Baltazar, have you any knowledge of that event to share with us sir? (If anybody here might have access to information shedding some kind of light on Collier-Cobb, you might be the best "shot in the dark" we have at obtaining it here. He grant's inquiring mind wants to know.)

I remember seeing clips of that fight on the local news. (I lived in the LA area at the time). I remember thinking that it was about time: No matter how good of a chin you have, if you keep getting hit on it, your chin will eventually fail you.

In 1980 or so, there was a big dinner honouring heavyweights of the past and present. Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and Larry Holmes were all there. So were Renaldo Snipes and Tex Cobb. In his usual fashion, Tex Cobb got up to give a toast. He said, "I'm honoured to be in the same room as some of the baddest n*****s ever." Renaldo Snipes stood up, and said, "I'm not going to stand here and let you call me a n****r!" Cobb said, "Relax. I wasn't talking about you."

 

Around 1982, Cobb admitted to have been knocked out before. He said. "Sure, I've been knocked out once. By a mexican bantamweight." ... "One of my buddies was swinging him by the ankles at the time."

 

Funny. A few years back I started the same thread and you posted the same response .. I totally believe you but do wish I could see the fight as it is a weird one ... Cobb took bombs from Shavers and got crushed by this inexperienced nobody ? I mean of course it can happen and who knows where Cobb's head was at that late in his career and a tank job was possible as well ...

 

Louis, Ali, Frazier and Holmes came from generations past where these things wouldn't have been as offensive as to Snipes. Larry seemed to like Tex before their match as much as Ali liked Bugner and JQ going in, no prefight acrimony at all. Randy made his whiteness into a huge joke.

Reporter: "Tex, will you try to fight him on the inside?"

Cobb (laughing): "No, I'm going to stand on the outside and throw rocks!"

Howard Cosell to Randall: "Do you know that your fight means I may not get to spend Thanksgiving with my wife?"

Tex: "I know. She sent me a "Thank You" card!

And the immortal classic line to referee Steve Crosson: "You're white. Help me!"

Even Holmes got into the act the following morning. At a press conference with coffee in hand, the Assassin smiled and related how Randy told him, "Larry, I sure would have liked to fight you in a phone booth!"

Holmes: "Good idea! You can call me!" (This might have been the moment during his reign when he felt most content and accepted. The WBA Title meant less than it did when Terrell and Ellis held it.)

 

I remember hearing about this bout.

I tried to find out, what the hell was a Dee Collier.

Then I remebered, he was a California Cruiserweight.

I looked up his record, and I was perplexed.

The result of the fight, was like a trick math question.

Just one of those nights, where quotients fool you.

 

That was typical Tex Cobb really sharp wit. He was in no way racist that's just the way he talks. In fact his best friend in Boxing was Earnie Shavers. Tex, Earnie & Michael Dokes made a rap record once singing together. Never did get to hear it bet it was hilarious

 

Did you know When Tex fought Larry Holmes for the title The final bell sounded to end a one sided brutal 15 rounds Tex turned to Steve Crosson & said " Hey ref give me 3 more rounds I'll be Heavyweight champion of the world," When Tex told me this I thought it was another Tex legend. But I ran into Steve in Dallas few years ago & he verified Tex said "Give me 3 more & I'll be Champ Larry cant hit me no more his hands hurt him too much I'll knock him out." lol Tex said afterwards
