Anyone know what his wingspan/reach is? I've watched the Shavers, Norton and Holmes fights but unless I missed it they never had it listed. Much appreciated.
Did Tex Cobb hold the mythical ATG chin status before Oliver McCall rolled into town, or what? I'm not old enough to know any better, forgive me.
Sort of......he had an iron chin but it eventually failed later in his career and he did take Shavers best shots....interesting note on his chin is he fought for the PKA world superheavyweight title within months of the Holmes fight and had not been dropped to the best of my knowledge in PKA either but the average hitting D Collier crushed him with 4 KD's in the 1st rd
Well he had been dropped before that fight by Gregg but this fight with the bigger Collier looked like a legit 1st class beating.....Cobb was in line for a title shot if I recall with a win but took a pretty bad beat down according to Cobbs wife the beating was legit.....Tex gained nothing from it if he did throw it but a beating
I've heard the night before the Collier fight that Tex was in full party mode, drinking and snorting cocaine. Not the best way to prepare for any opponent, even a journeyman like Dee Collier.
Might be true, Cobb wasn't the first or the last to do that but either way he was dropped 5 times in his career which his chin and size/strength seemed to his only asset other than that he was slow, not a heavy puncher just tough...which seemed to be enough for many fights
His chin was known as the best in heavyweight boxing during his good years. There's been a lot of speculation and rumor about the Collier fight. Gregg caught him with a good right hand i don't think he saw and he was pretty tired. Irregardless his chin may have been giving out. He was partying hard and had taken plenty of punishment over the years. Mustafa Hamsho had a great chin but in the Hagler rematch it suddenly let him down.
Sean O'Grady once said the chin is like a cash register. Eventually if you keep filling it, the register pops open. Eventually the accumulation of punches catches up to you, and suddenly you can't take a punch. It happened to O'Grady against Andy Ganigan, and it appeared to happen to Cobb against Collier. The Collier KO loss was likely legit. It happened in the '90's and involved a shady manager who was later murdered.
