If you got credit for getting your ass whooped by greats there would be journeymen out there eligible as the greatest of all-time.
GazOC - There are a lot of good fighters that are defined as 'world class' because they are competitive and perform well on the world stage, in title fights, against the top guys in their division. 'Elite' guys are those guys that take it a step further. For me their are only a handful of 'elite' fighters around, although I would define a fair few fighter's as world class. To give you an example, I would define Joshua Clottey as a 'world class' fighter, he's a guy who can beat some of the top guys around him in his division, and be competitive with pretty much anyone. Whereas a guy like Mayweather is what I would class as 'elite', he takes it that extra step further in that he can beat anyone in his division, in what he's achieved and in the fact that despite Clottey being a very good fighter - a world class fighter even - Mayweather is still a level above.
I look at it like a sportsman failing a drugs test. If you miss/don't take a drugs test/fight its equivalent to a fail testing positive/loss in the worst manner.
Exactly. He took the fight and came up short. It was a shot for nothing for him and it didn't pay off. He's still a world class 140lber and has been for 4 years, what a **** career.
I think you kind of illustrated his point though. It's a very subjective term that is different to each individual, so it causes some confusion. World class is far more easily defined, since it is a guy that can be competitive at world title level.
"Elite" is a term used when somebody wants to denigrate a boxer for being merely 'world class'. Do people really understand what it takes to be a world class boxer for 4 years? A being called 'world class' boxer used to mean something, now it just means you're not 'elite'.
I understand your point. But then again the term 'world class' in itself is pretty subjective. A lot of people will reserve that for the very best fighters, not just those competitive at world level, even though that makes the most sense.
I have come to the conclusion you have nothing to worry about TFFP. He's just posted a topic in the general forum talking about how quality of wins should rank over undefeated records. Talk about stating the ****ing obvious.
Hatton V Pac is ages away. This will be a longer induction then Hayes excursion into the heavyweights.
I was born in England and raised in Scotland, but I have Russian and Icelandic ancestral relatives. My grandmother would never forgive my parents if they didn't raise kids with a basic grasp of Icelandic words and culture. Bizzarely, the only non-English languages I speak are French and Gaelic, but I plan to speak Icelandic some day. I might attempt Russian in the distant future, but only if they Romanize their alphabet like sensible people. At my best I have the passion of a Russian, the prudence of a Scot and the nobility of an Icelander. At my worst, I have the passion of an Icelander, the prudence of a Russian and the nobility of a Scot!
