Chisora is a perenial contender who has beaten other contenders. and fought for a world title. He remains ranked. He is a contender. Perhaps you could say he is a fringe contender, but a contender nonetheless.

A gatekeeper is an unranked guy who you have to beat to become a contender. He metaphorically keeps the "gate" to being a contender. Hence, "gatekeeper."
