I think you may have done British boxing a massive service. certainly the pub i was in was like the good old days of eubank, benn etc. the fight lived up, if not bettered, expectations and the way it just grew and grew made it fabulous sport. so many people are talking about it (just look at the level of activity on here over the last 48 hours) and the fact that it surely will happen again will just keep the general public's interest up. suddenly de gale and groves are national names and the interest in a rematch would be phenomenal. just wish one of the terrestrial channels would get on board, there are so many good domestic fighters/dust ups at the mo that it could end up being another golden era
It was a decent domestic scrap, no more, no less. Hardly a classic, and a long way off being PPV worthy.
I get the original post though. Two young, unbeaten British fighters at a sold out 02. Great pre-fight build up. The fight itself wasn't a classic, but the build up and occasion certaintly got people talking and interested.
that's the point i was trying to make blackout! thanks certainly the 40 odd people i was with couldn't take their eyes off the fight, especially for the last 3 -4 rounds - it was a slow burner, but intriguing none the less. at the very least it has made 2 more british boxers into household names , which almost doubles the amount pre saturday night!
there was more to it than that though. a fight doesnt have to look like gatti vs ward to be a classic.
I think its the first big British fight since hatton/mayweather thats lived up to expectations and this time the more popular fighter won aswell which always helps.
+1 We need more domestic dust ups, I have no time for this 'oh it happened too early, it could have been bigger'. Absolute bull****. See who is best in your own country, before you go to European and World level - that is what should happen in all of the weight divisions.
i'd say amen to that.i'm already looking forward to mitchell-murray and chisora-fury. as i said it's shame terrestrial tv isn't interested because those 2 fights could provoke almost as much interest to the general public as groves-de gale
Yeah, I do appreciate that the whole event was good from start to finish. However, the bit we actually paid for, ie the fight itself was still not PPV worthy in my opinion. I would like to think think that this fight paves the way for more good domestic fights, just not PPV though...
You guys must have been watching a different fight in some alternate universe, it was crap, C.R.A.P. Thank god for Bernard Hopkins.
Completely agree with the OP this is what we need big British fights. Properly built up and properly promoted this will get the sport back on its feet in this country. People are interested in the build up and the fighters. There was also a fair bit of talk about Bellew and Cleverly. We just need these fights to be made and properly built up by Sky and the promoter There are so many god domestic fights that can be/have been made. I do beleive this will be a great year for British boxing and could be a golden era in terms of cracking domestic dust ups. Groves Degale Mitchell Murray Bellew Cleverly Chisora Fury Price v Winner Hall v Mcdonnell Quigg v Booth/Frampton Barker v Macklin All top quality fights with plenty of other cracking domestic fights amongst them
Domestic dust ups is the way and your list is spot on. Even the smaller guys are representing like Prince Aaron vs Webb.
