WTF... Hopkins was soundly beaten by Dawson, who was crushed by Stevenson. Stevenson is the man at LHW, geez people get a fukkin grip.

 

Well, Hopkins is fighting Shumenov in a unification bout. The winner of that bout will probably fight Stevenson in another unification match.

 

How many belts does Dawson have? Dawson got caught flopping out a lazy jab. What would have happened in that fight if that left had not landed? You cant compare B-Hops fight with Dawson to Stevensons. You know styles make fights and in a rematch who says the same thing happens?

Hopkins was lineal & WBC champ. Dawson beat him. Dawson was lineal & WBC champ. Stevenson beat him. Stevenson is lineal & WBC champ.

Yeah a lot of ifs - was just a thought experiment to illustrate a point. And yeah Golovkin isnt the King either, even if Sergio retires - because he hasnt crushed all the pretenders.

If Cotto wins, yeah he has a claim to the throne. If he went on to beat MW contenders , he could solidify that claim. If he went on to fight other people who arent MW fighters.. well he might have the title of King, but as for myself at least - I wouldnt recognize his authority as such.

Just like stevenson holds the title of King right now. But theres this rebel Lord by the name of Kovalev out there saying the King aint all that. If he ignores that challenge.. yeah he will still hold the title of King, but he will be remembered as a pretty weak one who lacked authority in his own kingdom.

 

You know that Kovalev doesn't have an established fanbase and only did decent regular HBO numbers while on the undercard of a Stevenson fight, right?

I hate to pull the business card, but BHop is a lot more recognized than Kovalev in the boxing world... not to mention in the land of Stevenson's fanbase, the province of Quebec.

I agree that Kovalev is the most serious threat to Stevenson's title. We just need to accept the business politics of it all, with Stevenson trying to earn as much cash as he can before he retires. Almost like a Martinez way of doing things with Cotto.

Haymon sent E-Rod to HBO to fight Ward. Kovalev-Stevenson is not impossible, could happen after the Hopkins fight... and bet on Sugar Hill having one hell of a gameplan to land on Hopkins' old head. It might be ugly.

 

Stevenson is too one dimensional. I think theres a 50/50 chance B-Hop will hold the **** out of him and survive.

 

Fighting Hopkins just makes more sense.
If he wins, and wins by KO or TKO, he goes into the fight with Kovalev as a favorite.
If he wins against Kovalev, he's the man at LHW and probably undisputed.

It's the path of least risk and most reward.

And you will keep working until you drop dead, in all likelihood leaving debt behind for your kids to inherit and with no savings. That what 'just fine' leads to. Stevenson is positioning himself to provide GENERATIONAL security for his family.

The 'glory' of a Kovalev fight ain't going nowhere. Them Showtime paychecks are though.

 

That's what boxing is to you.

To your average fighter, it's a profession. A JOB. A way to pay his bills. I know fans like to convince themselves that their favorite boxer is in for the fame. But tell that same boxer on fight night that his purse will be cut in half and see if he still gives a dayum about 'glory' and 'legacy'.

There are a lot of people (promoters, networks, etc.) eating real well off of boxing. I'm now going to blame a 36 yr old who just became bankable and is actually in the ring taking those risks for trying to get as much paper out of this game as possible.
