Charlize theron defintly has african ancestors, technically, you can call her of african descent. There is no rule book for this kind of thing...

If martin lawrence decided to live his life in germany, and his parents were immigrants, i would consider him of german descent..... Is he of german descent ethnically? Nope. But is he of german descent technically? Yep. Its all based on opinions really, since there is no real way to define these things. no rule book to turn too

If you happen to have a rule book laying around tho, i guess that changes everything

Vanilla ... when the terms "African descent" is often applied it is about people who are descendants of those who came from Africa as slaves. This is pre-colonization ancestry. This is referring to a "race" of people that has their place of origination and culture in a specific region. All blacks the world over are descendants from Africa. That's how I believe it is applied.

When talking about blacks from Europe, the Islands, and America, their Ancestry goes back to Africa, if we are only considering their "black ancestry." I don't like the term African American though... I am a black American, plain and simple.

One of the reasons that it is bad for us to continue to just refer to ourselves as the so-called Negro, that's negative. When we say so-called Negro that's pointing out what we aren't, but it isn't telling us what we are. We are Africans, and we happen to be in America. We are not Americans. We are a people who formerly were Africans who were kidnapped and brought to America. Our forefathers weren't the Pilgrims. We didn't land on Plymouth Rock; the rock was landed on us.

I personally think the term "African American" is weird. It's like saying I'm "Asian American" or "European American". You're either White, Black, Oriental, Arab, Indian, etc...
