To say that gomez gave klit a better fight than peters is not saying very much is it . I just watched the Skelton v rogan fight again now thats what I call entertainment
IMO it's the comparison to the lighter weight divisions that tarnish fights like yesterday...add non-competative American heavyweights to this and you know why the heavyweights are bashed like they are... In the 1980's it was Holmes - today it's the Klitschkos...it's never good when you have just 1 or 2 dominating figures in 1 division, especially when you know that they will never fight each other...
Vitali vs Sanders was also a very good fight. And how is Lewis vs Vitali became a very good fight cause it had to do with Lewis? If i recall many don't consider Lewis an exciting fighter to watch. Imo Vitali made it a very good fight cause round 2 it started when he stunned Lewis badly and after that Lewis had no choice but to go toe2toe.
It was Emanuel Steward's believe that vitali does not take pressure well and does not like to fight backing up. That is why LL played the aggressor in that fight and made it a good fight. Anyway, LL was 37 out of his prime and overweight and still won. The Vitali of yesterday against that LL would be a more fair comparision.
The first round was down right awful but after that Vitali pretty much had his way with him. Who else has looked good against Gomez? Can you imagine how boring that fight would have been if it was Shannon Briggs or Sam Peter in there instead of Vitali? Vitali did what he needed to do to KO an awkward Southpaw with a long reach. It was not that bad of a fight.
Lewis wasn't the big time aggressor until after Vitali dominate Lewis in round 2. Round 3 up to the ending, Lewis started to became the aggressor.
I am not so sure of that do to the reach and height disadvantage Toney would have. Toney is shot and is essentially a plodding fighter now.
I really think that whether or not you like the fight depends on your personal preferences. Everyone probably has their favourite boxer, so they will dislike the fight if their boxer does not win. I prefer the colour purple, and my mum prefers pink, so sometimes we disagree on what flowers we think are most beautiful. I guess as humans, we will always disagree on things..... but in many ways this is good as it helps us move forward (e.g., in research settings). I've just started watching boxing, so right now I am just letting my doors be open to what might be out there. I also tend to be non-partisan, so if I believe a fight is fair it is probably a "good" fight (e.g., the referree made sound decisions, the fighters appeared to be of a satisfactory and comparable health status, there was no name calling or other inappropriate behaviour, etc.). It is certainly interesting to read people's opinions on the fight. Sorry that I do not side one way or the other.
Gomez is past his prime also. He used to beat slick and fast at cruiserweight. Now he is overweight and slow. And he does not have a very good chin-
While I do agree with you that Gomez did look slow and lethargic not to mention he was throwing Calzaghe like slapping punches I just don't know how James would deal with the height and reach disadvantage.
I'm going to be honest, I always like watching Vitali fight, and his fights usually turn out to be pretty damn exciting to watch. That being said, this fight was not one of them. Vitali didn't look good at all, and Gomez pulled a Calzaghe and threw more goofy looking slaps, then punches. This was not a good Heavyweight fight by any means, I felt like I was watching a less skilled and powerful Wlad last night, and I have a feeling most fight fans feel the same. If Vitali is the 2nd best Heavyweight in the division and porbably could beat the number 1 guy in most peoples opinion, then the division really is in serious trouble.
At the end of the day, Vit is extremely effective though perhaps not always aestetically pleasing. If he was so damned easy to beat, how come no one is claiming the millions that would await the victor? Anyways, he is on his way down, getting old, so we won't have to watch him much longer. As for the fight, it was briefly entertaining, but fairly redundant over the last rounds, just as most predicted.
