I wasn't impressed. He's not a particularly hard puncher, but that's fine, most guys aren't bombers, but that's not good for his boxer-puncher style by any means.

He's chinny, I'm certain of that.

He looks like the type that would fall apart.

He's got defensive holes that need to be fixed.

    Not impressed.

Abner Mares is a nice combination puncher and is very relaxed for such a young prospect - no doubt in part because of his extensive amateur background. He's got a nice jab and a snappy right hand. Good body puncher as well. I like how busy he stays, which somewhat makes up for the fact that he isn't a hard puncher.

There are some things I see with him...
    1. He's too upright and doesn't move his head enough
    2. He has defensive liabilities especially against the ropes
    3. He doesn't have a lot of power
    4. His chin is questionable
    5. He doesn't look very strong physically
    6. He would have a lot of trouble with an experienced, world class pressure fighter

Mares is a good prospect, but he needs work (as all prospects do)

It amazes me how some people are cautious about supporting Gamboa, but will always jump on the train of guys like Mares.

    It just always happens.

Yup, Mares is a good prospect. But Gamboa is much better...

I am impressed. He fought a tough guy who's corner should have thrown in the towel around round 8. give some credit to his oppenent who must have come from baldomirs blood line with the shots he took. The kid's got 2 good arms, and his left hook/right hook combo is gonna starch a lot of folks. He will be champ, and I'm on his bandwagon already. I did not see any indication tonight that he would be the type to fall apart. He maybe was amazed that his oppenent was taking all of those shots, and knew the knockout was not gonna happen.

    I agree.

I'm not gonna go overboard, but the kid showed me something last night.

Also looked like he fought, over half the fight, with a broken nose.

Dunno, the kid is pretty good. He's still just a kid, wish he had more pop, he shoulda took that guy out, but still, he's got the goods.

Not sure where the chinny stuff comes from either, has he been rocked yet?

Didn't see any indication of that. Marchiano hit him with some nice right hands, but didn't seem to faze him all that much. Not saying his chin's iron, but I'm thinking he can take a pretty good shot.

He reacted pretty well after getting his nose bloodied in the first round. Seemed to handle himself pretty well under when Marchiano applied pressuer. Generally kept his composure throughout the fight. Sorry...don't see how he'll lose his poise or cool in a similar situation.

Agreed-kind of. Pretty good use of legs, and a tight guard...but could use a bit more head movement. I wouldn't exactly say his defensive ability is "pourous".

I was...but it's way too early to start calling him a future champ. Let's see how he progresses.

you guys are all ****ing nuts to be so quick to be on his ass about flaws....sure he ahs them but damn...hes only 21....and has great skills. hes going to be a great fighter at that weight and even at 122 in the future just let him develop a bit.

kid can box and punch. throws fast and effective combinations. i was amazed with him. he kept his composure even when he did seem hurt and boxed. didnt get desperate like other young and inexperienced fighters would.

hes going to be fine. give him time.

He's certainly got the right trainer to improve his game and help him grow in the areas he needs to grow, so I'll give him time...
