Jon Thaxton has been named the number 1 contender for the European Lightweight Title.

The current European Champion is Russian Yuri Romanov.

Thaxton has also confirmed the next time he defends his British Title it will be against the mandatory challenger - either Amir Khan or Graham Earl, depending who wins on December 8th.

Nice one, although I thought Sky were setting up Thaxton Murray following John's win the other night... Be great to see the board mandate these fights.

Being made contender doesnt really mean anything, he could have 5 fights before Romanov!

I thought Thaxton v Murray might get made too - especially as they are both with Hennessy.

Seems Thaxton has his sights set on facing Khan or Earl next though - says he sees that fight as the semi final with himself already in the final and it will prove who is the best Lightweight in Britain.

If Khan V Earl is one semi final why does he not fight the other hungry young prospect from his own stable in another semi final.
He does not fancy the Murray fight - low reward high risk.

To be fair to Thaxton I'm not sure you could class him v Murray as "another semi final" when he is already the Champ.

I'm a fan of Murray so am all for him getting a shot at the British Title - this match up might still be made, particularly if Khan does beat Earl as many expect and then goes the WBU route against McAllister (been speculated about in another thread) rather than face Thaxton next.

thaxton should leave the sport gracefully hes done all he can hes a domestic level fighter at best and he isnt getting younger, if stewart could out work him and take him to the brink of defeat some one with ramanovs speed, power and precision could seiously hurt thaxton.

Thaxton will walk through Yuri, unless Romanov gets nother reason to pull out of fighting anyone decent.

Are you crazy , Thaxton most likely knocks out the Khan v Earl winner and would give Romanov a great fight .

If Thaxton can beat Khan(whol will easily deal with Earl) and then Murray then a fight with Romanov would not only make sense but be great for the fans .

I would favour Romanov to win though .

Thaxton may not be getting any younger (33) but the last fighter Romanov faced was 41 years old!

Stewart gave Thaxton a very good fight but he still stopped him even on a poor showing by his standard.

thought Hennessey were going to give Meager the Romanov assignment.

Looks like Thaxton - who likes to test himself -would gun for Romanov.

Murray-Meager anyone? After they win their fights on the December 7 card in America...

no way, if thaxon beats khan you can make an argument that khan lacked the kind of experience needed if he beats murray convincingly then i'll put my hat off to him. but those are very unlikely possibilities IMHO. both fighters tear a new hole in thaxon, in his last fight he fought ameturishly, he was slow and his age obviously showed that night. stewart out jabbed him in the first 5 rounds now imagine if a puncher like yuri did that :tired lights out for jono
