That's exactly what I'm getting at. I had hoped that competition would lead to everybody stepping their game up and trying to offer better value but this suggests that we're heading in the opposite direction. Collectively (some) fighters, promoters and TV execs have driven the sport out the mainstream through sheer greed but they want the same returns from an ever decreasing fan base. PPV = less fans = more PPV = even less fans and so on until you're paying more and more for every scrap of boxing they throw your way.
A robbery would imply you're being forced to do something you don't want to. But in this case, nobody is putting a gun to your head to cough up that same £15 you did for Haye-Harrison, Haye-Klit, Degale-Groves, etc, for an event involving at least the number one boxer (and biggest attraction) in the sport in one fight, a certified legend and warrior in another, and an extremely talented future star in one more.
I think the card itself is far more PPV worthy than most in recent years, I just have an issue with PPV itself. The only time I've ever paid to see a card was Hatton vs. Pacquiao and that's largely because my brother was a huge Hatton fan, so we paid for it together. I knew it wouldn't be 'worth' the money but I went for it anyway. All these cards since though, have either been a mismatch or you just know it's not going to be a good fight.
It isn't **** all to all people though. Don't assume everyone's in the same financial position as you. SKY fees are already er, sky high, and these PPV on top makes boxing an expensive sport to follow.
Nearly everyone with a Brain has said this is PPV Worthy, yet people are calling it a rip off? A £15 robbery? Give me a break, you cheap fools.
I've bought plenty. At least I have some Money left on the side after to buy more than just Pringle's :yep
Its all subjective. Some people thought 40 quid for the show below was a robbery too. http://boxrec.com/show_display.php?show_id=606288
I think the main issue isn't about whether you buy or don't buy. I think PPV seriously hurts the sport, especially when people like Mayweather are on it and TV companies should be discouraged to run PPV events. This is a terrific card and if it was on Sky Sports, given the right promotion it could quite easily get a few hundred thousand viewers and attract non-fans who would be intrigued by seeing Mayweather, who sells shows easily. Instead, it's going to be on PPV for an amount which puts off any casual fans. At the most, they'll get 50,000 buys. I can afford the £15 without an issue but it's the principle of it. I don't want to encourage something which I think has a detrimental affect on the sport. I hope people think the same way as me too, so either Primetime stop running PPV events or we see these cards shown on Sky Sports instead.
It's a double edged sword. It hurts the sport in terms of attracting viewers but at the same time it generates more money which is the catalyst for making the best fights. Sky would have picked this fight up cheaply if they hadn't bit a hand that fed them.
