I think I put Ali a little too high come to think of it, but I was largely thinking of his strategic nous and ring generalship which I classed as 'skill'. Having said that, I can't really justify having Ali in and Ray Leonard out then....

As for Kid Gavilan, I don't think there's anything he can't do. I think he has an argument for being the most skilled fighter ever actually. Where do I start singing his praises?

I'm suprised no one has mentioned Don Curry as yet. I don't think he's top ten, but by the definition others have taken to skill here (leaving out radar and intuition and what not - they are included in my definition) I think he has to rate a mention.

Has anyone mentioned Ricardo Lopez yet?

Quite simply the perfect fighter imo.

Superb footwork, beautiful combinations, defensively adept, amazing ring generalship, superior punching technique, you name it he had it.

    An absolute joy to watch.

My ten would be (in no order):

    Pernell Whitaker
    Roberto Duran
    Ray Leonard
    Ray Robinson
    Willie Pep
    Jose Napoles
    Wilfredo Gomez
    Ricardo Lopez
    Roy Jones Jr

Not sure about the last place. Maybe Salvador Sanchez, though I suspect a certain type of fighter would always have troubled Sal, same with Mike McCallum. Perhaps Monzon would round out my ten then, or JC Chavez. As a 15-round fighter, I think Chavez would've been extremely hard to beat by more or less anyone.

Curry has the right sort of style, but was too physically gifted for what i was trying for imo, he had a great combination of overall speed and strength.I'd say only his durability keeps him out of the very upper echelons of Welter physical marvels.Being a weight drainer helped of course.

then again i'm not sure i really succeeded with the criterion i tried to set.you could probaby pick at half the fighters on the list as being a bit too capable in certain areas.
