Drew seems to have stalled on his plans to do an 140 tournament so I'll pick up the slack. (You're welcome to take over the running of this thing when you want Drew).

Ok, let's get this one going.

I suggest we do a 32 man tournament, but I'm happy to do a 16 man tournament if others would prefer that.

It's now time to pick the 16/32 that are to contest it. Here are some of the possible candidates below. Feel free to add others that you feel are more worthy or to delete certain fighters that you feel aren't worthy.

    Barney Ross
    Jose Napoles
    Julio Cesar Chavez
    Aaron Pryor
    Antonio Cervantes
    Nicolino Locche
    Duilio Loi
    Jackie Kid Berg
    Tony Canzoneri
    Eddie Perkins
    Wilfred Benitez
    Kostya Tszyu
    Meldrick Taylor
    Oscar de la Hoya
    Pernell Whitaker
    Buddy McGirt
    Alexis Arguello
    Carlos Ortiz
    Ricky Hatton
    Carlos Hernandez
    Frankie Randall
    Pinkey Mitchell
    Mushy Callahan
    Johnny Jadick
    Esteban DeJesus
    Jimmy McLarnin
    Bruno Arcari

(The following are fighters that had fights at 140 when there was no division there) :
    Packey McFarland
    Joe Gans
    Dave Holly
    Jack Blackburn
    Henry Armstrong
    Benny Leonard
    Sammy Angott
    Beau Jack
    Pedro Montanez
Ike Williams (though he did fight at 140 during 1946)
Billy Graham (though he did fight at 140 during 1946)
Bob Montgomery (though he did fight at 140 during 1946)
Tippy Larkin (for all intents and purposes, though he did hold the title in 46)

Duran - fought a **** load of fights around 140, weighing 139. This maybe the best fighter at 140 ever

Robinson - fought 25 fights below 140 including some very good wins such as Zivic, Angott, Servo then fought many at 141, 143 and 144, safe to say he makes 140. During this time he first beat LaMotta weighing 145, bare in mind someone like Tyszu weighs 155 on fight night, Robinson is making 140

Mayweather - was perhaps at his peak at 140

The point being that the final would likely end up being Robinson-Duran, no?

ps. I meant to leave Mayweather out, hence the edit.

Possibly although maybe a Robinson who is only a 2year pro gets edged out in the early rounds (no seeding) by a canny veteran like Duran/Whitaker/Mayweather

And Ali probably wins a HW tournament, that doesnt mean leave him out of it, does it?

This thread is going to have a ton of great debates...What a list of great names. Besides the champs, I'd like to see Jose Napoles, Henry Armstrong, Joe Gans and Benny Leonard included.
Btw SS, adding a young Billy Graham is very interesting!
    Man! What a list!

Ali was heavyweight champion they weren't. Duran, for example, never seriously entertained being champ at 140. He was lightweight champ then set his sights on the title at welter.

...............How do the rounds play out then? How do we decide who fights whom?

I usually did my match-ups on a seed system. 1 faces 32 and so on.

Apologies for not getting to this sooner, but I got kind of busy this week. If you need any help with this tournament, Scientist, then let me know. (PM me if you do.)

I assume match-ups are 15 rounds, with the best version of the fighter at their weight, and if any circumstances (liberal ref, etc) need to be added, then that happens on a per fight basis.

Duran has close to 20 fights at the weight and defeated Saoul Mamby (who also might warrant consideration in place of Jadick, perhaps.) I say that if you include someone like Napoles, he might have to be included as well.

Sweet, outstanding list, but I would lose Callahan, Mitchell and Jadick and add in Saoul Mamby and the two Mayweathers. Also, it's up to you, but neither Whitaker or DeLaHoya really spent much time there. They did however, win titles at 140 so that makes them qualified. I might consider two outstanding contenders in Hector Thompson and Alfredo Urbina.

I dont think we should include SRR or Duran.

It might be a good idea to only put forward men who either held or fought for title at 140 lbs. At least that way we are likely to have seen enough of them at the weight.

    What do you think ?

Good idea. It should be champs for me. And the draw shouldn't be seeded, just random. If it's seeded don't bother with 32, cut it to 16. Why go through the motions with 32 vs 1, we know who's going to win.
