Yep. That way there'd be contests that would never appear on here normally. Seed 32 might face Seed 27 and the winner of that ended up vs Seed 21.

    Cheers scar.

Personally I'd like to see the most tried and tested guys in the division get a spot rather than the biggest names who occupied the division for only a meaningful fight or two.

As such, I am all for leaving the likes of Whitaker, Robinson, Duran, De la Hoya, Mayweather (does he even have a meaningful fight at the weight?) off the list.

Have no problem leaving someone like Johnny Jadick off, though he does have a couple of wins over Tony Canzoneri for the title at that weight, and if we apply the same scythe to many of the others, plenty will be gone.

I'll give my preferred 32 later on today, I suggest others do the same, and then we'll settle on who the combatants are and start by a random draw:good

Yeah, Duran has Kobayashi, Viruet, Mamby and DeJesus (loss) at the weight, that may get him in , though I'll see how I go when looking at it relative to what the others bring to the weight.

Drew, any time you want man, the show is yours. You know how to run these things better than me. Mamby is a decent addition to the list of names, it will be hard to squeeze him in a 32 though. Who knows it might happen.

Thanks mate, yeah I hope Graham gets in. He was most likely on the wrong end of the stick both times he lost to Pellone (certainly looked like it in the rematch for which I've seen a bit of footage) and he lost a razor thin match to DeMarco which could have gone either way as well.

Tippy Larkin has his way with him though, which is why I'm keen for Tippy to be in the tournament. If he has a good run where he doesn't face any punchers, he could score some surprising wins. The guy had great boxing ability.

...............Random seems a lot more fun; more anticipation and surprise.

Pick 'em out of a hat, Drew! :D

    Locche
    Tzyzu
    Mayweather
    Chavez
    Pryor
    Leonard
    Napoles
    Whitaker
    Ross
    Graham
    Cervantes
    Loi
    Ortiz
    McLarnin
    Williams
    Montgomery
    Duran
    Canzoneri
    Berg
    Jack
    Armstrong
    Walcott
    Duran
    DelaHoya
    Gans
    Angott
    Benitez
    Taylor
    Mcgirt
    Cotto
    Lewis
    Britton

Those are some of the names who fought in or around 140 lbs. Some of the names I'll agree don't really qualify as 'junior welters' though. I have no problem with just accepting the champs who fought consistantly at the weight.

Robinson was at 140 for around 28fights

When Mayweather moved to 140 the top 10 were Tyszu, Hatton, Judah, Himself, Harris, Gatti, Mitchell, Cotto, Corley, Witter. He beat 5 of those and Hatton became no1, retiring Tyszu and beating the man who beat Harris. The only reason the Hatton fight wasnt at 140 was down to politics, Hatton wanted to keep his linear title if he lost, he was offered the fight at 140 5+ times. Mayweather didnt benefit from some of these fights being at 147, he lost speed as he moved up

Delahoya beat 2 top5 fighters including linear champ Chavez

Whitaker grabbed a belt and beat on linear champ Chavez aswell as MCgirt who was an ex 140lb champ himself

Duran fought plenty of fights at 140

Thats possibly the best 5 fighters who have fought at the weight and the only reason they didnt stay at the weight that long was because they could achieve more money and status at higher weights

How many of those were meaningful fights though? The fight with Sammy Angott (which occurred a pound or less over the lightweight limit) and what else?

Mitchell was shot to **** when Floyd fought him (at 147). Gatti was as average as hell at 140 and would lose to 100 guys I haven't mentioned on this thread. Wins against Zab and Hatton occurred at 147, I can't credit Mayweather with those wins for the sake of this tournament, just like I can't say Whitaker beat Chavez and McGirt, who were both 140 pounders, and therefore guarantee him a spot in this tournament.

Chavez had lost to Randall twice really, and DLH beat a CHavez with a pre-existig cut, which further throws off the value of that win.

As I said above. These were welterweight fights.

Duran has some decent wins I grant it, but he did lose to Dejesus at the weight. Dejesus himself will probably struggle to make the final 32.

Guys like Robinsons, Whitaker etc. achieved things at higher weights but did little of merit at 140. I'd rather select the guys that did the business at the weight rather than put those in who all but skipped the weight, even if it is next to certain that they would have done well in the weight class.

Interesting choices of Lewis, Britton and Walcott.

Don't forget Packey McFarland mate, he twice outpointed Britton at 140.

It's not that black and white, because when we get back to the Light Heavyweights, and i assume we will with all the new members and such, Ezzard Charles would not be competing.

We need to sort this inclusion/exclusion criteria out to the n'th degree IMO, it's an ugly and very difficult one. Tho he skipped the weight there's every chance Duran could be the best 140 ever. Napoles is also a tricky case if we are excluding etc.

Maybe a cut off amount of fights, 10, 20 whatever everyone wants perhaps? I think we need to sort this out fully before we proceed too far. I'd like to see all divisions revisited as it's been a long time and we have so many new peeps here. It was a fantastic concept and run beautifully.
