Canelo, Lara, Andrade, Cotto, both Charlo bros, Brook, Williams... it's one of the deepest divisions in boxing. Canelo has plenty of competition until GGG gets old in bum land fighting the Joshua Clottey's and Willie Monroe rematches he's expected to. In another 2 years, GGG would be ripe for the pickin'.
I couldn't care less about Lara, Andrade, and the Charlo's. Boring fighters with boring personalities. Brook v Cotto or Canelo would be good though
You kidding right? Andrade and the Charlo bro's are some of the best talents we've seen in the 154 division in a long time. They can box, bang, and are all young and in their prime. Lara is also an excellent boxer with great defense, but I can understand why you would think he's boring. Still though, these are the best fighters in the 154 division.
154 is NOT a deep division. The top 6 or so fighters including Brook if he fights there are really good and all match up well against each other, but there's not much past that. Culcay for example won't be much of a challenge for Andrade. Look at the best 20 guys and it's one of the worst divisions. 160 is deeper.
The usual people who have been calling 154 weak are the same people who are upset that 160 is getting called mediocre.
154 and 160 are about equal in talent overall. GGG is just clearly dominant so it makes the division seem weaker. Neither division is exactly what I would consider stacked, but they aren't weak. I still say the strongest division is 147, but it is getting hard to argue against the super flyweight division. Honestly, I think I'm inherently biased against them because of how small the weight is, but holy **** is there talent there. The best fights are coming from the smaller weight classes at this point, which is funny because I'm quite sure they get paid the least.
Lol, what are you talking about? Even the second tier 154 fighters like Molina, Martirosyan, Smith, and Trout are better fighters than the majority of 160. 160 is called bum land for a reason, it consists mostly of domestic level talent, fringe contenders, and has beens.
Other than GGG, I wouldn't favor anyone in bum land to beat the top 5 at 154. Saunders, Lemmy, Eubank Jr, Lee and Jacobs would get dominated by Andrade, Charlo Bros, Lara and Canelo. Even Cotton has a chance, we've seen what he did in his tenure there despite being a shot midget.
Eubank Jr is pretty bad honestly. I'd favor guys like Lee and Quillin over him. He has KO power, but as far as general technique he seems to be lacking. I remember looking into him when I thought the GGG vs Eubank Jr fight was a go and being unimpressed by him. Maybe he's improved since the matches I saw him in but ugh. Even with his lacking skillset I'd honestly favor him over Trout and both of the Charlos just because of his power if we're talking head to head. That's the thing with the 160 division; a lot of the guys have crazy power and that serves as an equalizer. I can't say that about any of the 154 fighters (granted, part of that has to deal with the difference in weight but the gap isn't THAT big).
