The 17 of Calzaghe's Era Who Were Better Than Him- are there more or less??

Fighters of Joe Calzaghe's generation (Pernell Whitaker definitely cannot be included in this, he was at his peak in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Calzaghe didn't win a world title til 1997. Whitaker belongs to the era before, along with Chavez, Azumah Nelson, the young Holyfield and Tyson, McCallum, Camacho etc etc- guys belong to the era where their peak was) who were DEFINITELY better than him in my opinion, but others could be argued to be too, guys like Naseem Hamed, and current fighters like Miguel Cotto (who will overtake him soon). I rate them as greater on three counts: ABILITY, ACHIEVEMENT and RESUME:

(not in any order, but obviously RJJ is the clear no1)

    ROY JONES JR
    MANNY PACQUIAO
    LENNOX LEWIS
    BERNARD HOPKINS
    JAMES TONEY
    ERIK MORALES
    SHANE MOSLEY
    MARCO ANTONIO BARRERA
    JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ
    KOSTYA TSZYU
    FELIX TRINIDAD
    OSCAR DE LA HOYA
    RICARDO LOPEZ
    WINKY WRIGHT
    FLOYD MAYWEATHER
    JOHNNY TAPIA

There's 17 greater fighters from his own generation alone. Joe had talent, but he doesn't have the resume to back it up. Nine years from 1997-2006 doing nothing except beating up nobodies like Pocker Tudwill and Rick Thornberry while his contemporaries (that I have just mentioned) fought the best and each other.

He will never be considered top 10 of his own generation by the boxing world for this reason.

    Thoughts??

A few of those are above - certainly Mayweather (No.1 IMO), RJJ, DLH, Pacman, BHop.

Guys like Tszyu, Wright and Tito are debatable, as is JMM.

For them to be better than Calzaghe ... they would have to have atleast 18-20 championship fights ...

    Wright and Tapia

Are you taking the **** or do you really believe them two are greater than Calzaghe?

    For me:
    1) RJJ. And easy
    2) FMJ. A clear second
Next level) DLH, BHOP, Tszyu, Tito, Toney, Pacman, Morales, Barrera. Joe is in this group, and the order is debatable.
Next Level again) Winky, Tapia, Mosley etc.

Just on a tangent, who here ever followed Ricardo Lopez's career? I've seen a couple of his fights on youtube, but really don't think I can judge. I'd be very surprised if many here really could. I always discount the heavies and hobbit weights in these sort of discussions, but each to their own.

    B-Hop
    Winky
    and Joe

came up in weak divisions ... it wouldn't be hard to strive in a division where the competition level is low and your head and shoulders above the division talent wise.

Well, Wright was undisputed at jmw and beat a prime SSM and Tito in a shutout. While the Tito win isn´t much more worth than JC´s win over Hopkins it was at least a clear win. The win over SSM is more worth than anything Joe did. So it is imo debatable but i would rank Joe slightly higher than Wright.
Guys that should be ranked clearly ahead of Joe would be:
    ROY JONES JR
    MANNY PACQUIAO
    LENNOX LEWIS
    BERNARD HOPKINS
    ERIK MORALES
    SHANE MOSLEY
    MARCO ANTONIO BARRERA
    OSCAR DE LA HOYA
    FLOYD MAYWEATHER
So Joe would make the Top10 in his generation and that´s still quite an achievement imo - additionally to that he is the second best smw ever, after Sven "the Phantom" Ottke of course!

Kidding! He´s the best smw since the creation of the division - also i don´t think that counts as much as beeing the best in one of the traditional 8 divisions.

The fighters I have high-lighted are the ones I believe rate above Joe at this moment:

    ROY JONES JR
    MANNY PACQUIAO
    LENNOX LEWIS
    BERNARD HOPKINS
    JAMES TONEY

    ERIK MORALES
    SHANE MOSLEY
    MARCO ANTONIO BARRERA
    JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ
    KOSTYA TSZYU
    FELIX TRINIDAD
    OSCAR DE LA HOYA

    RICARDO LOPEZ
    WINKY WRIGHT
    FLOYD MAYWEATHER
    JOHNNY TAPIA

Mosley was a difficult call, but his resume is not particularly stacked either, he wasn't a better fighter than Joe, and Joe was more consistent. Otherwise, I'd say Joe holds a clear edge over everyone aside from Lopez and Wright. I may rate Lopez slightly ahead.

I Love Tapia and Wright but your deluded mate if you rank them higher than Calzaghe and the only reason he fought Pudwill is because Thomas Tate **** his shorts and ducked out of their fight a with a week to go so lets all here it for Tocker for saving the show:happy :happy :happy Good on Ya Tocker . :good

I knew Tapia would be the one most people would disagree with. World champion at 3 weights, fought the best around. I think he is right up there with Calzaghe. And I definitely think Winky Wright was better. Undisputed light-middleweight champion, went undefeated for 8 years, again always fights the best, has 2 wins over a near-prime Shane Mosley and a dominant win over Felix Trinidad on the resume.

Yes. They are clearly a different thing. If a guy comes along at a time when the standard of fighters on the scene is so so low (like heavyweights now), and unifies the titles, he has achieved great things, ie remaining undefeated and winning multiple world titles. But are there great names on the resume? No. See the difference? It's not so difficult really.

So by your logic then, Sven Ottke is better than Toney or Tszyu or Mayweather? Wrong.

This is all sooo speculative. There are so many variables. Who has Hopkins beat? Not Calzaghe, for one. Other than RJJ or FMJ, I think there's a lot of debatable inclusions there. Not that Calzaghe necessarily bests them, just that he could very well be their equal. Also, as an American I've got to say that Americans have followed the careers of most of the fighters listed, sometimes for decades. To think that there isn't an in-built bias toward those fighters because of that history is naive.
