Unquestionably a great fighter. Three time welterweight champion. I named him an honorable mention in my “ next 20 “ post on this thread. He had the great 20 fight rivalry with Ted “Kid” Lewis. Participated in 37 world title bouts, more than any other boxer in history. But his most famous bout was his win by disqualification over Benny Leonard.—-Mark

ThatOne, that’s an interesting point. We do evaluate many fighters without having extensive footage available to watch them. Particularly with a fighter like Harry Greb, for whom no fight films are known to exist. We analyze them through historical accounts of their bouts and the men who fought them. It could be reasonably stated that judging fighters that you haven’t seen is a highly flawed process. And I acknowledge that doing this can be problematic. But when we judge these greats it’s all speculation anyway. Even if a great deal of film of a boxer exists, our judgement regarding what he might do against other fighters remains in the realm of the hypothetical. Sometimes when looking at an upcoming fight in our own time we’re wrong in our assessments of the boxers and the bout’s outcome.Take care.—-Mark
Emile Griffith? Jose Napoles? Fighting Harada?[/QUOTE Griffith and Napoles are in my “ next 20” post on this thread. Superb fighters, but every great fighter can’t be in the top twenty. And of course, my list is only my humble opinion.
Noel857, thanks for the list. I’m always interested in seeing how people assess the best of all time—Mark
