The 2009-2011 Super Six Classic EASILY remains the best boxing tournament of recent times

Better than both Super Series tournaments from last year.

The 2009 Super 6 had absolutely world class fighters in the SMW division, some top 10 p4p fighters squaring off

Left to right: Ward, Abraham, Froch, Taylor, Kessler, Dirrell

From this tournament, we saw the rise of future #1 p4p fighter, ATG, HOF fighter in Andre "All Terrain Fighter, Son of God" Ward, who went on to beat Lineal Champion LHW Chad Dawson and Lineal Champion Kovalev x2, etc etc.

Also saw Froch destroying undefeated Bute and Groves x2

Abraham went on to do some great things too.

That tournament was just off the hook.

The CW tournament is also off the hook, full of undefeated fighters, full of great CW fighters.

However, that 2009 tournament stands head and shoulders above the 2 started last year.

    I had Froch winning 115-113
Busier and put the pressure on Ward. Controlled the ring.

Anywhere between 2-4 potential Hall of Fame candidates (one probably clinching ATG status at the weight), one fairly pedestrian 2-division world titlist, and Dirrell who mixed in high company but never did win a world title (unless you count interim, which you shouldn't).

Pretty solid group. Of course when you factor in the reality of exits & substitutions, and throw in run-of-the-mill contenders like Allan Green and very old Glen Johnson, it dilutes the water a bit. Still, pretty successful tourney and for now it does stand as the strongest one in boxing in some time, if not ever. WBSS, at least at CW, might in the final analysis have a couple of participants that are p4p greater than anybody in the S6 was, but the field also contained some chaff. The super middle version is horrid compared to its predecessor, just no comparison. Groves & Smith would be eliminated first-round in the S6.

To me the cruiser weight tournament is much more interesting than the super 6. The competition and the short waiting time helps alot. I hope the next series models after the cruiser weight series.

I prefer the cruiserweight tournament from this year myself. Eight top fighters in a straight knockout without pullouts or controversy (so far) to crown a clear top dog.

The S6 would have been fantastic if it had come off as planned, but in hindsight it was too ambitious a format. Taylor should never have been in there either, any fool could see that another big KO loss was going to finish him. Bute should have been in based on his ranking at the time. The final was at least a legit bout between probably the top two 168lbers of the last ten years but half the original cast ended up pulling out. The tourney overall was a bit of an anti climax IMO.

Great tournament, but the pullouts kind of killed it for me.

I can’t believe MVC actually put up a decent thread. The Super Middle tourney of 2009 was indeed great.

Yeah, the S6 was great, the only problem with it was the length of time it took to complete meant it lost momentum, but that doesn't take away from the calibre of fighter involved in any way. Maybe the CW one will end up down the line having the greater overall participants but for now the S6 owns that honour.
