Good. This appears to be a solid class which ought to be far less criticized than many.

Root was inducted into the Ring HOF by Fleischer in 1961, making him by far the earliest old-timer inductee not enshrined in Canastota. I opined when you originally released the nominee listings that this would give Root a major boost in the voting, and that appears to have indeed been the case. (To a lesser extent, this probably also applies to Gully in the pioneer category.)

Stallone was a key factor in the mid 1970s revival of boxing, along with Ali's return to the top and the stunning success of the 1976 US Olympic Boxing Squad. A case could be made that Stallone is overdue for inclusion.

I wish Harry Carpenter had lived to attend his own long overdue induction. Shade and Moore are excellent and educational picks.

Most everybody is going to have an objection to some exclusion or another, but this seems to be a well balanced selection overall.

The only selection that I don't really like is Cortez. The rest I'm completely fine with.

This should be an exciting and well attended event, with both Chavez and Tyson getting in at the same time. I've never been. Anyone been and explain what it's like. I know boxers already in make appearances, too. Hopefully Saad Muhammad will be there this year.

I would love to see my boy Saad in there too one day.

The problem with guys such as Holyfield & RJJ is that they would've been in the Hall a long time ago. Now since they're too stubborn to hang up their gloves we'll have to keep waiting for them to appear in the Hall. It sucks to seem them go on too....

Tyson, Tszyu, and Chavez got in on the first ballot. How utterly predictable.

It was not only predictable, it is unfortunate. There were three slots alloted for modern fighters (active since 1943). That's it. Is it just that these new jacks get ushered right in over serious names who are 'at least as' if not 'more' deserving than they...? Many guys who fought over 100 times against vicious competition were thrust aside yet again because IBHOF voters suffer from a severe case of myopia.

These things are decided less on worthiness and more on name-recognition.

Is Tszyu more deserving than Georgie Abrams or Ceferino Garcia? Hell, he isn't more deserving than Eddie Booker who isn't even on the ballot! I'll announce from the hilltop how much of an unmitigated disgrace that is. Meanwhile Sven Ottke gets votes. Which suit is gonna defend that decision? Bring him on.

Tyson. I'm a fan (though not an apologist). I didn't vote for him. His moral failings are legion but I'm not so sure that most of them are any worse than my own. The problem isn't that so much as how he bent over backwards to disgrace the sport. Does Tyson deserve to be inducted? Yes -though I don't believe that he deserves to get in on either on the first ballot or unanimously.

...At least he isn't getting in unanimously.

Yeah, the whole thing's a ghastly mess, there's no two ways about that. It's very nice and all, but seems a terrible, terrible mess.

No one is saying it's a mess. There are inevitably going to be those observers and voters who have problems with who is on the ballot and who isn't; and with who gets in and who doesn't. I voted for Chavez and would've voted for Tyson, albeit next year. The argument that Tszyu deserved it more than several others on the ballot (and not on the ballot) isn't very strong to anyone who knows who's who over the past 70 years.
