The 2012 US Olympic Boxing Team turned out to be a pretty good crop of fighters

With Joseph Diaz snagging the IBF Super Featherweight title last night, he joins fellow 2012 US Team alums Errol Spence (WBC & IBF Welterweight champ), Jose Ramirez (WBC & WBO Super Lightweight champ), Jamel Herring (WBO Super Featherweight champ) and Clarissa Shields (Female multi-division champ) at the top.

Also on that team were Marcus Browne (former WBC Silver and WBA Interim Light Heavyweight champ), Michael Hunter (top heavyweight contender, failed in a bid for Usyk's cruiserweight titles), Dominic Breazeale (who lost two heavyweight title shots), Rau'shee Warren (former WBA Super Bantamweight champ) and Terrell Gausha (who lost a WBA Super Welterweight Title shot).

I didn't have high hopes. None of the men won medals in London. However, all in all, that was a pretty solid team. Not great. But all the men turned out to be pretty solid pros.

Out of the nine men, six became champs. And all fought for world titles. Hunter might still have a shot, too. Depends on if any titles become vacant.

Pretty good batch considering so little was expected of them.

Yeah, I thought the 2016 team was better but of the 2012 squad the only loses in non-title fights have been by Jamell Herring and he still won a title. On the 2016 team Antonio Vargas and Carlos Balderas lost momentum with ko losses, Shakur is a world champ of course, Nico Hernández is switching to bareknuckle for some reason, Antuanne Russell is looking good and Charles Conwell looked good as well but we have to see where he is mentally after the passing of Patrick Day.

Yes, unfortunately, I think the 2016 squad might be one of, if not the worst US boxing team ever ... in terms of the number of successful pro careers resulted.

The previous worst may have been the 1980 team, because most of the top US amateurs turned pro before the team was named because the US announced it was boycotting the Games. But even that team included Donald Curry.

    Too soon to tell.
