The 55th anniversary of Muhammad Ali vs George Chuvalo, March 29 1966. As Ali phrased it, The Greatest vs The Washerwoman. It was originally was supposed to be a title unification between Ali and WBA Champion Ernie Terrell, but negotiations broke down. This bout was fought in Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada. It was 15 rounds.
I remember that day very well - not so much because of the fight, but on that day I passed my driver's test to get my driver's license. Regarding the fight, Chuvalo took the fight on 17-day's notice and took the prime Ali the full 15 rounds, giving him a hard fight in spite of the lopsided scoring.
Did you ace your driver's license exam? I had problem with parallel parking but passed. George Chuvalo did give Muhammad Ali a good fight, Ali weighed his heaviest at 214 lbs.
Yes, I aced the test, but I had a couple moments..... I was worried most about parallel parking but after starting to back iinto the space the officer told me to go on ahead. We then went out onto the highway and went through one of New Jersey's infamous jughandle U-turns which I had not expected nor prepared for. Somehow I made it (thank you, Lord!) and passed. Glad you passed, too!
And according to Chuvalo in the Facing Ali dvd after the fight he went to the hospital with bleeding kidneys, I went dancing with my wife. As per Ali holding Chuvalo but only doing it once because Chuvalo started hitting Ali in the side.
His Parkinson's sort of overshadows it but I'm sure Ali suffered lifelong effects from all the damage he took to his lower body.
