Ringside: Greb-Tunney I 4. Historic interests: Ancient Rome. Byzantine Empire. American Abolitionism. African American History. Europe in the Middle Ages. Early Christianity. Crusades. American Revolution. History of Warfare... 5. ESB Changed Opinion: Ray Leonard 6. Best Boxing Book: "Corner Men", Ronald K. Fried 7. Movie/Doc.: Stanley Ketchel 8. Worst Fight Prediction: I thought Duran would beat Joppy. Idiocy.
Who's better Saladin or Richard the Lionheart? How was your opinion changed? And what the hell were you thinking, Duran was what, 50? Lol why?
1. Who is your favourite historic fighter (if you simply cant commit to 1 name 3). Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Ezzard Charles, Lennox Lewis. (i cheated) 2. Which curently active fighter do you follow the career of with the most interest. Wladimir Klitschko 3. If you were given the opportunity to watch any fight in history from ringside which would it be. Ali vs Frazier I. 4. What historic topics interest you the most outside of boxing. WWI, WWII, Vietnam. The recent dinosaur topic was interesting as well. 5. Which fighter have you changed your opinion on the most as a result of your time on the classic forum. Harry Wills 6. What is your favourite boxing book ever written. "Dark Trade" By Donald McRae 7. If you were given an unlimited budget to make a film about the life and career of any fighter which would it be. The Night train, of course. 8. What is your worst ever fight prediction, be honest. I thought Calzaghe vs Lacy was 50/50 for Calzaghe at best. Jim, back to you....
There's only one Charley Burley. It's almost over now, but i'm really interested to see if Hopkins can squeeze anything else out. Sam Langford KO29 Harry Wills The Highland clearances. Bob Fitzsimmons. I always thought of him as a primitive weirdo freak oddball *****. Turns out he's one of the greatest that ever lived. I mean, I knew that really, but he's in my p4p top 10 now. Don't see him moving down any time soon. Might move up though. I know he posts here, but I'm honestly not creeping when I say that it's "In The Ring With Jim Corbett by Adam Pollack". Special mention for "Night Train" by Nick Tosches. Easily and by some distance the answer is Sonny Liston. Liston's story is coloured by extreme poverty, crime, top mafia men, the type of contradictory character that always makes for a great movie (a misogynist beloved by old people and children), a thrown fight against the most famous athlete who over lived, a weird form of redemption and then the final spiral towards a tragic ending. ...I picked Naseem Hamed to "outclass" Barrera
1. Who is your favourite historic fighter (if you simply cant commit to 1 name 3). Gene Tunney, Ray Robinson & Jhonny Own in no order 2. Which curently active fighter do you follow the career of with the most interest. No one in particular, I just try to keep up to date with current events 3. If you were given the opportunity to watch any fight in history from ringside which would it be. Harry Greb vs Gene Tunney I 4. What historic topics interest you the most outside of boxing. Nothing really :huh 5. Which fighter have you changed your opinion on the most as a result of your time on the classic forum. Willie Pep (from top 3p4p to a more realistic top12-15) 6. What is your favourite boxing book ever written. Genuinely cannot pick one out of many as I have liked elements of 7. If you were given an unlimited budget to make a film about the life and career of any fighter which would it be. Harry Greb or Jhonny Owen 8. What is your worst ever fight prediction, be honest. Zelko Mavrovic to beat LL That took longer than 60 seconds
1 Dempsey 2 none really 3 Dempsey Firpo 4 The evolution of Jazz 5 Napoles ,[gone up] 6 Factual In This Corner.Peter Heller.Fiction The Professional .Wc Heinz 7 Harry Greb [Dempsey,s been done] 8 Liston Clay /Benn Mccllellan.
The Lionheart was the most formidable warrior-king of the middle ages. Saladin is the greater historical figure. Both had high regard for each other and it is fairly clear that Richard I may have taken Jerusalem had circumstances (including at home) permitted. He stood there looking at it but had to relent. So he left with certain key positions more secure that he had taken in the Outremer and reinforced. His hope was that later crusaders could use as these springboards. Alas, they were inept compared to him. I have a better appreciation for Leonard. Before, I'd get rigid about his politics and relatively few fights. As for Duran at 47 taking the MW from Joppy, who was an average champ at best... well, what can I say, I'm a romantic. Whaddayawantfromme.
1. Who is your favourite historic fighter: Ezzard Charles 2. Which curently active fighter do you follow the career of with the most interest: Floyd Mayweather Jr 3. If you were given the opportunity to watch any fight in history from ringside which would it be: Jack Dempsey vs. Jess Willard 4. What historic topics interest you the most outside of boxing: Everything from the beginning of time. I love history. 5. Which fighter have you changed your opinion on the most as a result of your time on the classic forum: Gene Tunney 6. What is your favourite boxing book ever written: A Pictorial History Of Boxing by Sam Andre and Nat Fleischer 7. If you were given an unlimited budget to make a film about the life and career of any fighter which would it be: Tony Galento 8. What is your worst ever fight prediction, be honest. Marvin Hagler vs. Tony Sibson. I honestly thought Sibson was going to destroy him.
1. Muhammad Ali 2. Christian Mijares 3. Barrera vs Morales I 4. World War II 5. Sugar Ray Robinson 6. Muhammad Ali Bio: Thomas Hauser 7. Wilfred Benitez 8. Jones Jr vs Tito. I predicted Tito KO.
1. Roberto Duran. Not just his career inside the ring, but also outside it. I admire him as he fought for so long and moved up through the weights. A truely great fighter. 2. Oscar de la Hoya. I've always been a fan since around 1996. 3. Hagler v Hearns. Three rounds of mayhem. 4. The history of Glasgow Celtic. The football club I support here in Scotland. 5. Thats a tough question. Probably Sugar Ray Leonard. 6. McIlvanney on boxing. 7. Roberto Duran. His whole career and his legend status would make for easy film making with captivating interest. Duran was unique. 8. I can't think of a really bad prediction.
Jeffries, Dempsey and Holmes. Wlad Jeffries vs Sharkey II History Astronomy, History of Architecture, History of Pre-historic animals For the better or worse? Hard to say. Maybe Elmer Ray. Marciano_Frazier did a fine post on him a while back. An illustrated history of boxing by Nat Fleischer. This man, this monster. The Mike Tyson story. In a world title fight, I don't think anyone picked Dougals over Tyson.
I hope you won't take umbrage at my answering a single one in particular, which I've been obsessed with the idea of for years. Ever since I read Mickey Walker's autobiography, however blarney filled it might be, Mickey captured the popular image and spirit of the Roaring 20s as vividly as Clara Bow, Babe Ruth, raccoon coats, speakeasies, the Ziegfeld Follies, and the Charleston. He had the look, the youth, the energy and charisma which would probably be far beyond the ability of any established young actor to adequately portray, and I'd be invariably disappointed in any attempt to dramatize his story as only he could tell it, except within my imagination, as fueled by his own colorful narrative. Max Baer's life story, with Jack Dempsey as a central fixture might be a fine counterbalance to the way he was misrepresented in "Cinderella Man." (Some of the exchanges between Maxie and Jack read like comedy team material.) There are others, but I'm winding down for the day, and am just posting with a Crown Royal and cola nightcap in hand.
1. Who is your favourite historic fighter (if you simply cant commit to 1 name 3). My favourite fighter is Pernell Whitaker, but he is a little too recent to be historic. My favourite historic fighters are probably Jim Driscoll and Packey McFarland; two of the early great technicians. 2. Which curently active fighter do you follow the career of with the most interest. Probably Winky Wright, but no one with any great zeal. 3. If you were given the opportunity to watch any fight in history from ringside which would it be. I've got to pick two: I want to be there the day Jim Driscoll shut out Abe Attell, and I want to be there the day Willie Pep boxed a canvas masterpiece against Sandy Saddler in their second fight. 4. What historic topics interest you the most outside of boxing. Moslty ancient Greek history and culture. That is to say, the seeds of western civilisation. 5. Which fighter have you changed your opinion on the most as a result of your time on the classic forum. So many it's hard to say. Perhaps Jimmy Carter thanks to Manassa, maybe Michael Spinks thanks to JT, or even Joe Walcott thanks to yourself Janitor. But really there's plenty, plenty more. 6. What is your favourite boxing book ever written. I've never really read a book on boxing I'm ashamed to admit, but I would love to read some boxing bios about some legendary fighters that are half obscure. 7. If you were given an unlimited budget to make a film about the life and career of any fighter which would it be. I'd like to make a film which would loosely be based on the life of Nicolino Locche. I say loosely because it would be a comedy, most likely starring Danny Devito (if he could get himself into half fighting shape) and it would be about a boxer with absolutely no athletic ability making clowns out of guys so much physically superior to him just through the art of subtle evasion. 8. What is your worst ever fight prediction, be honest. I thought Zab Judah would outbox Kostya Tszyu. I was wrapt to be wrong though.
