The actual skill level of Jim Braddock

When your bubble of abstraction meets reality...

 

Can't we all just agree that Braddock would KO a prime George Foreman???

 

That was some sneer though. He might have beaten me with it.

 

I literally LOL'd at most of this. I mean Chok trying to make a mountain out of a molehill when it comes to Braddocks' skills...

 

The more and more I look at the Baer vs. Jim fight... I'm really starting to think Max just took the night off for whatever reason. Either he didn't want to be HW champion anymore or somebody told him not to be HW champion anymore. I can reconcile trying to win with that performance. No way was he trying to win that fight. Even crude county fair Baer was better than who showed up that night.

 

This is an extraordinary claim, which requires some sort of evidence to back it up.

I think it very unlikely, that Baer would have voluntarily handed over the heavyweight title, in his first title defense.

 

Fair enough, but the inverse is also true, and even more logically flawed. So didn't voluntarily give up the title, but instead barely fought... sneered and smiled most of time... and looked nothing like the fighter who beat Max or Primo. If you basically don't try, and don't even seem the least bit concerned about holding onto to your title by not trying... What sentence would you like to use instead of "Voluntarily giving up his title", because from his performance, that seemed pretty damn voluntary

 

I'd like to see some support for the claim that having lots of "likes" and comments on a YouTube boxing video demonstrates that the video's content and analysis are accurate.

Not saying that the claim is wrong; I'd just like to see the support for it.

 

Baer's hand injury is verified by multiple sources, so perhaps he was clowning in order to hide it.

Perhaps he knew that he wasn't in much of a position to defend himself, so he tried to keep Braddock's respect.

Some sources suggest that he actually injured both hands, in which case he would have been in quite a vulnerable position.

 

In that case, the quality of Braddock's performance still takes a major hit. Just from a different angle. How much credit would we give somebody for beating Frazier, if Frazier had injured his left?

 

Very good point. Either Baer was injured and still Braddock needed points deductions or Baer was so disinterested as to appear as if he wasn't trying and still Braddock needed points deductions.

You just can't spin this in a way that makes Jim look good. Out of interest, if Max had injured both hands, how did he manage to keep fouling? Is that how he hurt his hands? Had Jim got a hard on?

 

I think fouling was an essential part of Baer's game. IIRC, Baer's backhand was so integral a punch for him that he included it in his 10 minute "How To Box" newsreel. Like most normal fighters would treat their left hook or uppercut.

 

None of which looks even remotely like you're trying to hold onto your title. Quite the opposite. His hand hurt or not, doesn't mean you smile and sneer your way to holding to the title.

 

Braddock's unfair use of the performance-enhancing name "James J." is the main reason I don't rank him higher. I see a skill-less Braddock beating up better fighters on film, and it's clear he's using an artificial middle initial. There's no way he developed that "J." naturally.

 

This is of course a valid argument.
