In the weekend Age Sport and Style liftout on the weekend there is a double colour spread with our top 10 all time boxers.

The list ranking was weighted on the following criteria:

    - Ability
    - Courage
    - Achievements
    - How their rivals rated them

    Top 10 as follows

    1. Jeff Fenech
    2. Kostya Tszyu
    3. Les Darcy
    4. Lionel Rose
    5. Johnny Famechon
    6. Jimmy Carruthers
    7. Dave Sands
    8. Vic Patrick
    9. Vic Darchinyan
    10. Albert Griffiths (Young Griffo)

The Age has asked for feedback "Did we get it right? Send us your list of Australia's best boxers to
    This content is protected
    "

If we get in enough entries it might prompt a follow up article by Garry Maddox the author.

I suspect Vic Patrick is in for some heavy fire. You might want to provide a meaty bio for him Flamenco!

The top 4 are correct but the wrong way around in my opinion.

Not bad for a sparcely populated remote island made up in the main of convicts, aboriginals & refugees.

The order could probably be tweaked depending on personal opinion. But the most impressive part is the names missing - Barry Michael, Lester Ellis, Jeff Harding, Rocky Mattiolli, Tony Mundine Snr, etc, etc (and they're only some of the recent ones).

    For mine it's as follows:

    1. Kostya Tszyu
    2. Jeff Fenech
    3.Vic Darchinyan**
    4. Dave Sands
    5. Johnny Famechon
    6. Les Darcy
    7. Lionel Rose
    8. Jimmy Carruthers
    9. Tony Mundine (Snr)
    10. Jeff Harding

Apologies to many, including - Barry Michael, Lester Ellis, Vic Patrick, Rocky Mattiolli, Hec Thompson, Jack Carroll, Paul Ferreri, Charkey Ramon etc, and in particular Young Griffo, who I found hard to rank & compare to more contempary fighters.

**Darchinyan being still active has every chance of climbing even further.

on that criteria jeff harding shouldnt be in the top ten.. he rates poorly in ability. cant match most in achievements and never got much respect..

I saw this list in the Maddox article in last the week before in Melbourne age. That bloke is a nonse.

The 10 mentioned in some kind of order. IMO
    1 Rose
    2 Darcy
    3 Sands
    4 Griffo
    5 Tszyu
    6 Carruthers
    7 Famechon
    8 Darchinyan
    9 Fenech
    10 Patrick

Im happy to argue my list. As with CHB, theres a mountain of names that have rights for arguement to place in the top 10 above several mentioned.

He faught great opposition and deserves great credit. Bill Lang, Bill Squires and Colin Bell etc would have been no match for Aussie Joe.

Regardless, Joe is not a top 10 Australian boxer, as he boxed predominantly in Europe, as a European before becoming an Aussie citizen.

How do you define an Aussie boxer.
    re: Vic, Kostya etc...

Do you start calling them an Aussie when they become professional, these guys have represented their home countries at Olympics...can they have 2 nationalities??

They become Australian when they are successful. If they lose they become Kiwis.

The list involves the top ten Australian Professional boxers. Simple.

Yes, Tszyu, Vic, and numerous others turned professional under 'OUR' flag. Therefore, they represent AUSTRALIA as professional fighters. 'Aussie Joe' was boxing in Europe for years, prior to wraping his buxom girth in our flag.
